Brighton(and Hove) writing group

This came up on another thread.

I reckon there must be quite a few Brightonites on ABC and it was suggested that we could attempt to set up some sort of informal writers/writing group in the area.

Details. There are no details, but I think it would be an informal meet up, chit chat kind of thing, with the distinct possibility of it being in, or at least very near to, a pub.

Anyway, if you fancy it, click on my name above and mail me, with any ideas. If we get enough people interested, then we'll sort something out.

Oh yes, I'm home now. Someone suggest another date then, another Friday perhaps? (Or perhaps we'd better wait until Tony's narcolespy has fully cleared up) Any time, any place, anywhere.

Go on - suggest a date - Friday isn't always best though!
Martini Tim

Well, I can do most nights, it's you lot who get all fussy about it!
Lou

Yep I can do most nights too. (Who am I kidding - I could do any flaming night.) Martini Tim - like the name change. Is it to avoid confusion? [%sig%]

I'm okay any night except Weds

I think we have all lost the main issue here somewhat - namely, what are we going to call ourselves...

I can only do Friday or Saturday nights.

I thought... Brighton Organisation Of Booksmiths! ...although the downside is that the acronymn spells 'BOOBS'

Or BOB - but I think Mr. Dobbs has that one sewn up in Brighton. OK - where and when to meet? My local is the Crescent on the corner of Clifton Hill and Clifton Road. It's great to sit in the garden and as the days are getting warmer that will be a strong possibility. But make any other suggestion you like! Tuesdays and Fridays are best for me on the whole as I commute the other days. And that can be a moveable feast! So... thoughts?

Well TC, I tentatively suggested Friday May 6th, which seemed to suit some. I've not been to the Crescent, but it is pretty central and sounds okay to me. Any more for any more?

Okay - what road is the Eagle on and is easy to bike to from Hove?
kjheritage
Anonymous's picture
Anywhere will do for me, when and where then chaps and chapesses? Will have to bike it though and I think Clifton hill ie...er...on a hill :(

I'm not free Sunday - Thursday nights. So Friday and Saturday nights are the only ones i can do - or during the day any day. The 6th sounds cool but I have no idea where the pub is. Why not meet somehwere in the Lanes, that would be easy for everyone. Or how about something near the station?

The Lanes sounds good to me...pubs around the train station are pretty grim.

Hi - it's on Gloucester Road (I'm pretty sure), which is near St. Peter's, Just off Gloucester St. which is the left before Trafalgar St if you're coming up from the seafront heading for the A23. (Possibly Goucester St. could be one way though, but hey you're on a bike.) Clear? As mud probably. [%sig%]

The Crescent is sort of near the train station, but (to the best of my knowledge), isn't grim. Personally, I find a lot of pubs around the Lanes quite grim, especially on a Friday night. How about the Eagle? (where we had the last Brighton ABC event). It's down near St peters and is okay.

Hi - still not booked a babysitter but 6th shouldn't be a problem. Crescent or Eagle's fine for me. At least the Eagle's on the flat for you KJ (unless you're coming from the racecourse of course). [%sig%]

The Eagle is perfect for me

The Eagle gets packed to the rafters on a Friday night - but it is a nice pub! Same with the Basketmakers over the road. The Shakespeares Head on Spring Street is down the hill a bit and always quiet. That OK? What time?

Being a Friday, it might be best to meet up earlyish, before it gets too manic. I'm free all day(has oft been said), so whenever.

I'm free from 5.00 p.m. onwards
Lou

Early early might be tricky for me (babysitter blah blah blah yawn). Am sure could get there for 7ish though. [%sig%]

Me and Smilieboy will get there early then, I'm sure two hours of drinking beforehand won't effect us...

Hello Lizzy - Thought I got home before you old gal, but hey, that's peddle power. WHERE was Mr Cook though? Had photofits out all over the county, but... maybe it was a Day of the Jackal thing... [%sig%]

Last night was fun - glad we met up and looking forward to the next one already :-) Let's see if we can rope some more (unsuspecting) people in too. Any clues what happened to Tony?

Incredibly sorry - I had a very late night the night before after a whole day of campaigning - then, after one hour's sleep, had to be up to go to the chiropodist and then on to the hospital and then over to hampshire to see my old Mum for lunch - and I have youngest just back from Thailand with her boyfriend who has just had an operation his knee, oldest up from Devon, partner trying to hang her exhibition for the Festival - and it all just got to be too much! I sat down for a second to rest before coming down to the Eagle and went sound asleep for three hours. Aaaggh! Many apologies - and I WILL make the next one!

Right then chaps - which Friday or Saturday? (Btw Friday's are easier than Saturday's for me ................ so I guess we're back at square one again.) [%sig%]

Friday is fine, I'm sure the pubs are still open, not that that's...ahem...the most important thing. Shall we meet at that pub where we ended up last time? On Church Street, can't remember the name - but names are not my strongpoint. They did sell booze though, I remember that....lots of it actually...
Lou

Friday's, Saturday's... what?? Sorry - Fridays and Saturdays (how embarrassing!) [%sig%]

Oh hello - crossed messages. Yep sounds good to me. It was the one, near a building site, and you could see the new library from it, I seem to recall. There clear as mud. [%sig%]

Well it's ok cos we had a substitute 'Tony' anyway - the bouncer at the Eagle approached me when i wandered around looking lost and asked me if I was looking for someone. I said 'yeah a bald guy called Tony' and he said 'that's me' which resulted in some confusion! Turns out he really was called Tony (he insisted on showing me some identity) and was also bald. Unfortunately he was not a writer or we'd just have taken him along and pretended it was you. :-) Anyway, I really did have fun. It felt so good to meet up with other writers and even though I was the baby of the group I didn't feel like I didn't fit in or anything which was cool. Thanks guys :-) See you soon, E

Yep, it was a top night out. Was really nice to meet everyone - putting a face to the pseudonyms. Great chat, interesting personalities lots of laughs and, ahem, lots of booze...
