Calling all computer nerds!

Right, here's my problem...

www.UkAuthors.com went down a few weeks ago due to server probs. Now, apparantly, it's back up but...I can't get into it! All I get is the 'this page cannot be displayed' thingy. I've tried logging on from 'favourites' - no go! Have tried typing URL into address bar with every combination of upper and lower case letters that I can think of - no luck! And yes, I've tried the 'refresh' button (even *I* ain't THAT thick) - no joy!
A friend of mine cleaned my C drive (do I call him a friend now??) a few days ago, and deleted all my cookies, could this be the prob? Although as far as I can tell it shouldn't be (have no trouble getting into any other sites), and sites can only 'make' cookies after you've logged on to them, right?

Anyone got any bright ideas as to why this should be so?

HELP!!

andrea, I wouldn't touch your computer. if you had a major problem it would not let you in here or elsewhere on the net. as looli says, it is a server problem, as indicated by the original message you had. if you could not get in using the various addresses we all gave you you will have to wait until one of the upstream servers that routes you to that site is updated or has the fault corrected.

Hi Andrea How are you doing? I had a look at this and I can access it and very swiftly at that. Try http://www.rhbg08387.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/UKA/humour.htm If you are still problems I can come over and have a look for you sometime - I live very close to you don't I? Which ISP do you use?? Perhaps they are having DNS problems and the TTl has been reset on that site. Let me know if you are still experiencing problems and I can come over (and I'll bring some of the beer that you brought over to my house last time - it's still in the fridge - aren't I a good girl.........actually I have been away for 2 weeks but it sounded good!) Talk to you soon Loo

Erm - and this one www.writers-news.co.uk They all seem to point to ukauthors so I think they have been very busy with updating DNS records - hence why the dutch ISP's could have had a problem with it. I registered my new site in the UK last week and could access it fine from london - but when back in the netherlands I could not reach it. The DNS should get updated soon - but keep trying the other links - one of them should work for you - otherwise it is just a matter of patience. All DNS records are update using a TTL (time to live) This can be set anywhere from minutes to hours to weeks even. So it really depends on how often they update. Let me know if you want any more help and good luck

Hi Loo, Tried the first link several times...the Writers News one is UKA in a previous incarnation I think. Got a detailed analysis from MLB's PC whizz daughter - none of which I can make head nor tale of. Seems server machine is down though (niet echt plat, maar heel traag) Use Chello, seems to be a prob with Blueyonder, but yes, by all means come on over and HELP!!! I'll provide the booze... Going away Fri though...bugger...I HATE these bloody tech probs...

Oh, thanks, Stormy - seems like the voice of sanity, that. It's just such a bugger, as I can't do any work for 'em 'til I can get in (as it were). *resolves to go off on hols, stare at sheep and forget about PC's for the duration*

I am a bit of a fraud because I am not a computer nerd, nor do I wear an anorak. I just want to offer an alternative view. How about a Canute type stance and we all return to good old fashioned fountain pens and sheets of crisp fresh paper? Have you wondered...original Dickens scripts can still be read. But now ..... in our IT age? In the blink of an eye the technology changes so rapidly that future generations might not be able to access the original works of current writers at all....they will just be left for nerds with museum pieces of obsolete and long scrapped computers.... Just a thought. Dave...reaching for my quill pen...

You certainly had plenty of good old fashioned carbon paper there Dave. Actually, I disagree. The art of letter writing was dead. Telephone chats as advertised by BT was all that was left. We had all become Maureen Lipmans and Bob Hoskins'. Now we write to one another again. I send my Mother emails. But I never used to write. I now write to people across the world who I would not have met unless, by chance, we were in the same pen-pal club. Far from paper being rendered obsolete it turns out that offices are using more and more as people print off emails and information downloaded that was, hitherto, unobtainable without many hours in the library, cross referencing and sending off for obscure articles. I am sure the original works of current writers exist on paper - we are all aware of the fallibilities of this technology now and back up and print off and file just like in the old days. E books may come and go but you cannot beat the feel of a paperback in your hand as you fall asleep in front of the fire. Glad you got back in Andrea ..... wave as you drive past my house ... unless you are flying of course. In which case, look down.

e-books just don't make sense to me....you can download them, print them off and read them....oh like a book then....books are just so mobile.. i always carry one because living in london you experience a lot of delays on trains/buses/tubes and they just save your sanity...

If you have MS Explorer, it's just possible your old settings no longer match what is needed by the resurrected program. It takes a bit of finding out, but I'd start there.
Andrea
Anonymous's picture
Thanks, Penumbra, but where, exactly, do I start? (tried Internet options - security/connection/advanced/content/programmes etc)

you need to toggle your data source to the correct baud rate, then click the No option on the USB root hub. make sure the chipset memory range is to set to 3900, but only if your NDIS adapter is set to enhanced mode. if you have a serial wave device fitted you'd best remove it. close all applications and switch the adaptive transmit threshold to TLC and the UFO settings to Friendly. if that doesn’t work you can try your helpline, but they’ll probably say the same thing

http://www.rhbg08387.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/UKA/index.htm That's what I get as well, and it works. Try deleting the bookmark from your favorites section. Then clear everything out of "history." then start from scratch typing in the url for ukauthors. Other than that, I don't know.
