Word verification

When replying to comments I am asked to input word verification. What's its purpose? I find it very annoying.

Dear Luigi., I am glad you have said that you have to do this verification as I was worried it was only me!

'Just because I am paranoid doesn't mean 'they' don't have their eye on me!' (old joke) All the best       Elsie

Perhaps it is part of the National Security Agency's surveillance. But let's not speculate and wait for the techies to give a rational explanation. wink

Hi both,

It's part of our spam-protection system. As trusted users neither of you should have to do it - but we've been having a bit of trouble with it lately. I'll try to get to the bottom of this and things should be back to normal soon - sorry for the exaggerated security!

Clearly this is an Anti Spam measure which helps sites cut back on BS that is intentionally loaded by individuals who wish to promote irrelevant stuff and establish links to higher (PR) ranking sites. If one is annoyed by such anti spam practice, then perhaps one needs to ask one self how one feels about copious amounts of irrelevant crap being linked to one's work and published opinions!
Sadly Spammers exist and GOOD sites work hard to ensure that their efforts are thwarted - I don't believe the process has been established to 'annoy' anyone except of course... Spammers!
Good on you ABC for at least making the effort to provide a spam free site... Though clearly, that subtle objective is completely missed and thus isn't appreciated by some...

But surely if only registered users were allowed to post there should be no problems. And if any spam occurs it would be possible to identify the culprits by their ID.

Yes Luigi - that's the plan! Ideally trusted users who have been on the site for a while won't have to go through the same anti-spam measures as brand-new accounts (spammers do register with us fairly frequently).

As I said we were having a few problems with our anti-spam module, but we have updated it and it should be working correctly now. If the problem persists don't hesitate to send me an email or post here and I'll look into it!

Fair enough, thanks Luke.
