Lyrics that haunt you. Lloyd Cole.
Dear All
I have just booked one of my fave singer/songwriters ever to play at the UCL Bloomsbury. Lloyd Cole.
I love his haunting and witty lyrics.
Here is my favourite.
‘The coolest thing I ever saw
You were sitting there smoking my cigarettes
You were naked on the bare stone floor.’
It reminds me of a time that I ever fell in love with this Spanish girl called Marina who stayed with me when I first came to London. I was out of my depth of course and she went on to do PR for Siouxie and the Banshees.
What lyrics haunt you?
Ralph
Nilsson
"Everybody's talking at me,
can't hear a word they're saying,
just the echoes of my mind."
Pink Floyd
"...they're gonna send you home
to momma
in a cardboard box."
"One of these days I'm gonna
cut you up into little pieces."
"the promised land looks pretty good
from where I stand
here on the outside
looking in."
"but now I've grown, the dream is gone,
and I am comfortably numb."
"money is the root of all evil they say,
but I ain't see no one giving it away."
So much from Pink Floyd....
Hank Williams
"you be daffy, I'll be dilly,
we'll be just plain silly,
settin' the woods on fire."
"you were just in time
to be too late,
I ain't comin' home no more."
I rise up from her arms she says, "I guess you call this love, I call it room service."
-- There is a War, Leonard Cohen
Look out here is hoover standing ugly at the door
his pretty little tubing getting sucked into the floor
the floor says this is dangerous the fridge is unaware
that everything it closes on is living without air
Plug it in the wall and "it works" oven cries
little drops of grease all dirty brown but clean inside
big house small house tumbling around
its a nail the knives and forks and the table to the ground
and Unplug Katie crush the orange
wash the inside toast the peelings
break the kitchen play the windows
play the floor the tiles and ceiling
Left to live out my life on earth
It was a lost weekend in a hotel in Amsterdam
We've all been there ...
We were here, all together, yesterday . . .
"Everybody knows the fighr was fixed
the poor stay poor, the rich get rich
that's how it goes"
Everybody Knows, Leonard Cohen again. Haunts my work with Haringey Council.
"No shapes sail on the dark deep lakes
And no flags wave me home."
i think Liana may have quoted these the last time this kind of thread came up, but in the spirit of TS Eliot, i've nicked them off her and am claiming them for my own. this citing of favourite song lyrics - it's a dog eat dog world, i'm afraid.
"you're so pretty when you're faithful to me
you're so pretty when you're faithful to me
will you buy me a soda?
will you buy me a soda?
you tried to molester me in a parking lot
yip
yip yip yip yip"
from the pixies' bone machine - from surfer rosa- one of the most exciting albums in the world ever - anyone else catch that brilliant documentary about them on chan4 the other night?
no?
thought not.
Laaaaaaaadddddy in reeeeeeeeddddddddd, is dancccciiiingggg with meeeeeeeeee!!!!
(well it haunts me!)
We are the other people
We are the other people
You're the other people too
Trying hard to get to you
Crusing for burgers in Daddy's new car
Crusing for burgers won't get you too far
Ronnie's in the army now and Kenny's popping pills,
Oh how they yearn to see a bomber burn
Wait till the fire turns green...
What's the ugliest part of your body?
What's the ugliest part of your body?
Some say your nose, some say your toes, but I think it's your mind...
All Frank Zappa
All from the greatst album ever: We're Only In It For The Money
Man thinks 'cause he rules the earth he can do with it as he please
And if things don't change soon, he will.
Oh, man has invented his doom,
First step was touching the moon.
Now, there's a woman on my block,
She just sit there as the night grows still.
She say who gonna take away his license to kill?
Now, they take him and they teach him and they groom him for life
And they set him on a path where he's bound to get ill,
Then they bury him with stars,
Sell his body like they do used cars.
Now, there's a woman on my block,
She just sit there facin' the hill.
She say who gonna take away his license to kill?
Now, he's hell-bent for destruction, he's afraid and confused,
And his brain has been mismanaged with great skill.
All he believes are his eyes
And his eyes, they just tell him lies.
But there's a woman on my block,
Sitting there in a cold chill.
She say who gonna take away his license to kill?
Ya may be a noisemaker, spirit maker,
Heartbreaker, backbreaker,
Leave no stone unturned.
May be an actor in a plot,
That might be all that you got
'Til your error you clearly learn.
Now he worships at an altar of a stagnant pool
And when he sees his reflection, he's fulfilled.
Oh, man is opposed to fair play,
He wants it all and he wants it his way.
Now, there's a woman on my block,
She just sit there as the night grows still.
She say who gonna take away his license to kill?
Dylan - who else?
Seek ye the CD, "What's the ugliest part of your body?" by Jon poole. From the ORGANART site... A tribute to FZ and recorded on an old 4 track... it's extraordinary stuff.
Hoping this link works...
Jon Poole
It didn't work but copy. paste, go and buy...
"then up-stepped the man
with the big cigar,
and said,
Come here boy,
I'm gonna make you a star."
This was a big hit in the 50s at the peak of Elvis' popularity. I think the title was "The All American Boy" I'm not sure, and certainly don't remember the artist.
"boy, you're gonna carry that weight a long time."
Beatles
"I rode a tank in the General's rank,
when the blitzkrieg raged,
and the bodies stank."
Stones
Pills
As I was lying in a hospital bed
A rock 'n' roll nurse went into my head
Hold out your arm, boy, stick out your tongue
I got some pills, I'm gonna give you some
She went into my head, into my head
A rock 'n' roll nurse went into my head
Into my head, into my head
As I was lying in a hospital bed
I got the pills for my heart, that didn't ache
Pills for my heart, it's just a little to late
Pills for my love, don't try to put me at ease
Rock 'n' roll nurse got me down on my knees
She went into my head, into my head
A rock 'n' roll nurse went into my head
Into my head, into my head
As I was lying in a hospital bed
I got the rock 'n' roll nurse...
Nursey, nursey, what I don't see
I can't understand what you're doing to me
Give me the pills, give me the shot
You got me wondering what the @!#$ I got
She went into my head, into my head
A rock 'n' roll nurse went into my head
Into my head, into my head
As I was lying in a hospital bed
I got the rock 'n' roll nurse making it worse...
Doctor! Doctor! Get in here and see
I don't think the job the nurse is giving me
Give me the pills, give me the shot
You got me wondering what the @!#$ I got
She went into my head, into my head
A rock 'n' roll nurse went into my head
Into my head, into my dead
As I was lying in a hospital bed
I don't think I've heard of any of these bands - who on earth is Frank Zappa?
Don't just ask US who Frank Zappa was... Go and find him on WinMX or maybe even buy some of his stuff! Track it all down and then come back and tell US who you think Frank Zappa was.
...and don't let on to TC that you've never heard of him!
We'll never hear the last of it...
My partner used to play this song to me. We knew each other as children and met again after 20 years, and started living together. He played me these Lloyd Cole lyrics:
She took me down in the basement to look at her slides of a family life,
Well you knew at times at the age of ten,
She looked like Greta Garbo then,
And I loved her then,
But how was she to know that.
(Well it worked!) - Ralph, we just have to go- Please just point me in the direction of booking info and we're there. Sadly I've never looked anything like Greta Garbo or had perfect skin but apart from that...
"She loves you, and you know you should be glad!
OOOH!"
The Beatles of course
(Well I was only nine or so at the time)
"All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
Whilst all the women came and went
Barefooted servants too
Outside in the cold distance
A wildcat did howl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl"
Bob Dylan but sung by Jimi Hendrix Experience
This time I was about 13 but it's been my favourite song for 35 years. Wonderful sense of expectation of .. what? Biblically, the fall of Babylon, I believe, but is this what Dylan's two riders would have announced?
"Shiny shiny shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark..."
Velvet Underground (Venus In Furs)
Pervy I know but to hear John Cale torturing a viola was a revelation. But not too pervy for Dunlop ads! From one of the very best and underrated LPs
"Be the first one on the block
To have your son come home in a box"
Country Joe + The Fish
Should be played incessantly on every U.S. radio station!
"You're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet,
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet."
Joni Mitchell (A Case Of You)
"Morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away your choice and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the newborn day
You know some time you're bound to leave her but for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat"
Al Stewart (Year Of The Cat)
"I was dosed by you"
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
