Yeah, sometimes it's both parties having an affair, and both sides preferring not to know about the other. Never underestimate the fear of having to start afresh. It's huge. This is why I would NEVER dream of meddling with somebody else's marriage. If one of my friends knew Karen had one-off regretful sex with someone, I wouldn't want to know. We can all make mistakes and put them behind us, and move on; and knowing something like that would irreparably damage my marriage. An affair is a different kettle of fish...is it a love affair? Prolonged? Does she love him more than me? Maybe I'd want to know then, but my official line is: no meddling, let fate do its thing, and the couple sort out their own problems.
I think dotty, it's a fear of having to face the consequences on your own. Maxine Carr seems (obviously I don't know her) weak, as does Alex Best. They choose disfunctional, manipulative and bullying partners and don't believe they can function without them. Therefore they delude themselves because it's easier to cover for them, or turn a blind eye to the truth, than having to take responsibility. I don't presume to say that this is the case for your friend btw.
I live on the continent (in the Alps), and only learned quite recently Maxine's story. I completely agree, I'm absolutely sure Maxine is sweet and innocent, a nice person indeed, no doubt she's a victim of fate and back luck, loving the wrong person at the wrong place and I'm sure when she lied she didn't know what had happened before she came back. Being in love with this monster led her to make a mistake, and as far as I know, she admitted it afterwards, but she has paid an awful price for it. She has all my sympathy. I hope she'll overcome all this nightmare and can enjoy now a happy life in a very short time. She doesn't deserve being treated the way she was. All the best Maxine, keep hope and faith!

I like Bacon's paintings - he shows people at their most vulnerable, catches them unawares. Not always in the most flattering light, though. I wonder how his subjects feel about being portrayed in this way? Do they feel gratified that someone has captured their 'real' selves, or just plain misunderstood?

Although personally I think it is a good job that she is not coming out yet and she was very misguided in making the application, I think it is troubling that the Government change the law AFTER someone has been convicted because they are fearful of a tabloid backlash. She was found not guilty of assisting Huntley, but guilty of lying to the police, but the press and public want her to be punished as though she had been found guilty of both. Not very comfortable with it, though this is becoming a familiar feeling with this Home Secretary.
