What a good night it was tonight. Some superb performances. Everybody behaved and Colin stayed on his feet.

I look forward to seeing the results of Eammon Scorsese Hoxtoneye's work.

Well done all.

Golly, was I the first home?

I had to disable pop-ups, ads and off-site content in privacy service before I could view it. Looked like an excellent night.

Glad you liked the video Hayley. I should have some of the "full length features" ready next week folks, though it will take longer to make Stormy presentable for public viewing on a family website. [%sig%]

Oh stop fretting Colin, it will all be in your local cinema soon. The rights have been bought by Hammer Horror.

Late as ever... I was too shattered when I got home this afternoon to post but have since made up for last nights alcohol drought ... so if none of the following makes sense you can blame it on the sunshine, moonshine or the boozie. It wasn't age, George, it was lack of time! The evening, for me, flew by and, like others above, I wish there had been more time to socialise (part of that was my fault ... too busy flogging my chapbook in the intervals to meet everyone there). Fergal was a delight ... I felt we could have talked all night and the following week but we barely spent 5 mins yapping ... likewise Jude; hardly spoke to her at all. Shook hands with Rokkitnite but failed to register the Norwich crew! Sorry. I recognised Beef from her photo on Justyn's site just as Tony called order for the last set ... and soon after, the Norwich set were gone (I hadn't realised Tim had an entourage!) Performance wise, I'm probably going to repeat what others have already said: Jude: Loved it. The fact that two of us read poems condeming 'IKEA' must mean something! You were wonderful. Fergal: Superb! Shallow story maybe (your quote), but you brought it to life and had everyone laughing. Rokkitnite: Fantastic! I've not witnessed a poetry slam before but I imagine this is the sort of stuff presented ... I thought your first poem brilliant but have to admit that if you'd read a forth (in the same style), I would have needed a lie down, earplugs and therapy. I'm looking forward to seeing your Channel 4 Hay on Wye programme. Jason: Incredible stuff! Andreas: Maybe the wrong chapter? Simon: The bloke second in line behind Mark Brown to buy my chapbook. No idea who he was/is. He gave me some hints on how to improve performance, then vanished. I was more than gobsmacked (find a new cliche) when he stood up and performed what was, to me, the best of the night. Not for its content, but for the way he delivered it. He brought a story to life that, had it been told by anyone else, might have faltered. What a performer! **** Fishnbert, everyone I spoke to asked after you. You were missed! Sorry you couldn't make it. ***** And thanks to everyone who bought my chapbook (or chavbook as Mrs. S calls it) and many thanks to TC (ho hum) for promoting it far better than I can do in a live event!

Bugger, forgot to say how much I enjoyed talking to George, Gerry, Martin, Mark and David - Bobblehat's book kept me amused during the train journey home. Good to meet TC at last, too! Top bloke! *said, trying not to sound too sychophantic* I think I ought to go to bed.

Double bugger: I forgot Tim Smillie! Sorry! Clone of TC he may be, but a thoroughly nice bloke who made me laugh. I'm definitely going to bed now. Except that I've just remembered Emma and her partner ... bollox ... this could go on forever. But I am going to bed. Goodnight, and thanks for a wondeful evening.

All I can say about the photo of me on tymeworks is when God gave out the chins I thought he said gins and ordered a double!

Jude honey, there's only the 'one' chin visible in your piccy, and a very fetching chin it is too. Could the problem be too much gin 'today' and you're seeing double?

At least you aren't being ridiculed by your staff on the front page. Ho Hum. The latest one is a lot better - but they wouldn't use that, would they? Hox - I got all the clips just fine at home - very impressive it is too. Thankyou.

I am sorry about your foot Tony. May be it will improve a lot with metal in it. Less pain. I would love to come to an event in June if I possibly can. If short, not gorgeous people are allowed in that is.

Haha - you sarcastic oiks - just saw the pics and I am definitely NOT photogenic - at least not in the top one (I look like I'm trying to squeeze something - possibly an alien of somekind - out of my cheeks). The reading one is okay though. Everyone else looked lovely of course. Can't watch the vids though as I don't have a computer at home and these library computers won't let me download the necessary. Perhaps that is for the best.

Hayley, that pic of you is lovely. Actually it is one half of the pic I took of you and Tony. His pic is the other half, and that's a good one of him too. (unlike that APPALLINGLY comic one on the front page)

it was a real pity it ended at 11pm, no chance to chat afterwards, i thought extra time had a midnight licence or even later, maybe a venue with a later licence would be better, or longer intervals between acts...

Yeah, the one on the front page looks more like the drummer on Shooting Stars than Tony. Fergal, you look fine. I like the first one better actually--very sparkling. The best one is smillieboy. Amazing how George got the subject emerging from a black background in that way. I did a tiny bit of photoshoping to accentuate the contrast, but not much.

Hello folks - I've only just been able to sit down and read this thread! We only got back late last night as we made a day of it yesterday and met up with a Uni friend of mine and did what felt like a five mile hike round Hampstead Heath followed by Italian ice-cream! I'm completely knackered today... Hey - Ferg and Missi - you are very kind with your lovely complements, thank you. I was gobsmacked with Ferg's young-lookingness and fabulous hair colour, wow! But moreover her story worked so well as a reading, with Ferg's slightly understated style which added to the impact of the wit of the tale. My partner enjoyed Ferg the most...but he's just naughty...and departed with the comment 'I'll never be able to look at cat litter in quite the same way.' Hayley - you'll go far girl... The evening had a great variety of style and delivery which held everyone's interest - just thinking about that again now, it really was a good mix of stuff. I was so pleased to meet new faces - Tim, Beef, Smillie, Jude, Hox and add to the numbers of folks I've met for real now...collecting up all these folks that I'll be telling my grandchildren about one day...'you know that famous writer, well I breathed in the scent of their vanilla cigarettes when they were just starting out...' Venue was good and well done to the team for all the effort put in. Nice chat briefly with Mark, David, Stephen, Tony and Hox and to hear all the upbeat stuff about everything that abctales is achieving. Indeed Tim did have terrific impact as a performer, great finisher. I wanted to buy stormy's book but as I'm living off my other half's generosity at the moment I had to promise a purchase at a later date. I like Stormy's stuff very much - his family seem to be a kind of way for him to interpret the world around and I like his combination of landscape with family relations. He was pissed off for fluffing a couple of lines in a barely noticable way - and really the whole night was so relaxed that it really didn't matter a jot, no one was flawless, in fact, as I recall all of you stumbled, which made the whole thing real and human and all the more communicative and intimate. Jason is obviously a brave man with a real drive to effect change for individuals with mental health probs and I wish him well with the publishing company. I agree with all the comments above about talecatcher, Simon and his fantastic storytelling gift. I was a real eyebrow raising story about the severed arm. Jude was deep and profound, as I expected, though with the twinkle in her eye that comes across on these forums too. I was pleased to meet you too, Jude, and I'm glad your friend enjoyed it. I really enjoyed Andreas' reading, as it was so different from the other stuff in pace etc, and a touching love story - a sort of Muslim/Christian West Side Story set in Cypress with an easy on the ears prose style and lots of engaging detail. I wish him luck with the publication. Thanks so much everyone for making the evening so enjoyable with your terrific writing. Beef - I also felt inspired to get back to the drawing board, when you get to hear how things work in the live situation there's a great deal to be learned. Both of us were so glad we made the journey down...and hope to see you all again soon.

you sure were very good night i think the star was tim by far, a bravura performance, a poet at the top of his game....i enjoyed everyone else, particularly the tale catcher guy and the story of the car crash....feargal was cool and sexy, stormy self assured, even when he stumbled (word wise), steven pegler? astonishing....but big round of cyber applause for tim... (can you tell i'm drunk btw?)

Well I had a bloody marvellous night (even if I did have to do a Cinderella flit before the end of Tim's set because I was scared about missing my train). The whole evening was brilliant, relaxed, funny - the readings were all good: I'd never read any of Stormy's stuff before, and I really really liked it. Jude was lovely and funny and serious at the same time - Tim was scarily confident and basically living proof that he is a performance poet beyond all other things (everyone was laughing raucously all through his set), Jason Pegler had that great combination of wit and depth, I loved that story about the severed arm by the talecatcher guy (was he called Simon?) - um... yep it was great....and I didn't get a twitchy face, which is a first for any public event I've ever been too (thanks for curing me abc...) (Oh and martin, you may have been drunk when you posted it but my day has been made by the comment). It was really good to put faces to names and personalities from on here. George was just as I expected but with an even better accent than I could have imagined - and Emma was lovely and very elegant I thought. I was delighted that Jude really did wear a pink shirt (I feel bad for not also doing so - but I hope she forgives me). I'm only sorry I didn't get a chance to speak to everyone more. (Oh and Tony said such lovely things about me that while he was saying them I was looking around thinking, 'Ooh, who's this he's talking about? I can't wait to hear her read...') Thanks for a lovely night. I'm still beaming. It was by far the most relaxed and friendly event I've ever been to, in the best possible way (and wonderfully worthy too - and all the better for it!)

Yes, another bloody good night. (Sorry I'm late posting, I'm STILL trying to get through to Ticketline for some Springsteen tickets) Where do I start? Well I'd better get the 'Hayley was cool an sexy' bit out of the way first. But it's true she was, and a good live performer as well, I enjoyed her reading very much. I didn't see her leave though, she must have sneaked out. Smillieboy is a Tony Cook clone, and nothing like I expected. Emma was radiant, elegant and exuding womanly fragility (she'll probably be pissed off with me saying that). Stormy was a little surprising though. His reading was what one would expect from him APART from the fact that he wasn't PISSED! Can it be that he's getting old? He even did a book-signing at the end of the evening! Yes, he's published some of his stuff and the first print run is almost sold out. The guest performers were well received and as Hayley said above, the 'severed arm' tale was great. Tim was absolutely bloody manic! It would be a breeze for him to have a career as a stand-up entertainer. It was lovely to see Beth Settle again too. The biggest disappointment of the evening? Lofty Gardenia, obviously having hit hard times, turned up wearing a drab charcoal grey T shirt! Where was the flamboyance of yesteryear? Can it be he's given his 'stage' shirts to Oxfam? Was he in mourning? Shirt? More like 'shirk' if you ask me. Most amusing 'side show'? Watching Eamonn Hitchcock at work. Other attendees included Gerry, and of course Mark and his sister Alison and David Floyd. BUT where were all those that said they'd come and didn't? Where were all those that didn't say they were coming and didn't? Where IS Matt Purland?

Yeah sorry I crept out George - Tim was on his thrid poem when I left. I was disappointed not to say goodbyes, but my train left at 11.30 and I couldn't dare miss it with nowhere to stay in London. I think Tim should be a performer... that much confidence should be chanelled somewhere!

I've put them on the PC, had a quick look through them, there's a few good ones. I need to 'mess' with them a bit and reduce file sizes, then I'll mail 'em to James. well recovered! (and thanks, I'm getting a lotta ego boosting on here today) It's funny when you meet people you've only seen in print isn't it? I think I was expecting you to be sitting in a tent. Did your picture on here use to have a picture of you in a tent, perhchance? What did your friend think of the whole thing?
jude
Anonymous's picture
Yes, my piccy on here used to be me in a tent! Sr Karen loved the evening, if she had any issues with your tongue heading to his penins, anal sex/ alien abuse or me smoking she didn't say so. She really liked all performances esp Jason Peglar. She was sorry she had to leave before the last act. My brother and My friend Richard also had an ace time and enjoyed all the readings. all in all I think my eligibility for the religious life survived almost intact!

Thank you very much for having me. I enjoyed it a lot (though I was super-pooped on the train home). I really enjoyed Hayley's story (to the extent that I briefly considered stealing the second 'should you be doing that?' gag for my novel, before deciding no, that would be morally wrong - albeit reluctantly!). I think prose is tough to deliver to an audience, but all the prose readers did a sterling job. I spoke to Jason briefly afterwards, and he comes across as a thoroughly nice chap. I wish him all the success in the world (although perhaps draw the line at the astronaut ambition).

The way you wrote that made it look like my tongue was actually heading towards a penis. I would like to make it clear for anyone who wasn't at the event, that I did, in no way shape or form, partake in sex acts at the abc reading. I read a story. Honest.

Oh, I hadn't seen your post Tim. You stuff was good - you made a proper performance out of it. I left during the third one because I am a time freak and couldn't bear sleeping at Liverpool Street (again). I give you permission to nick the gag. Please do. I was chuffed enough at the big laugh it got, so it's time to let it move on to pastures new. And Jude - I'm glad your religious future is intact.

Thoroughly enjoyable evening and as always, nice to meet people in real life way from the caricatures you get on here. Went far too quickly and not enough time to socialise in between the readings.... perhaps we should start these things earlier. A varied lot of readings and there was not a boring moment. It is great to see to so much talent and the passion that goes into these works is humbling. My particular favourites were the one armed man and Hayley's story is just so sexy and full of wit (as is she). Tim is a clever and powerful performer, no doubt, and should have a wider audience (I am sure one day he will). TC and the lot at ABC deserve credit for putting these things together. Well done you all and thanks for a challenging and entertaining evening.

I've been running through the video footage from Thursday, and thankfully most of it will be usable. Mississippi also shot most of the evening, so between us we should be able to come up with a good record of the event. It will take a while to edit and encode all the material, but in the meantime I've put a few short clips up here: You'll need broadband, and the Flash plugin ( most PC s already have it loaded ). Just click on the top button to get to the videos, then click on a picture to start them playing. [%sig%]

well one example and he won't mind me saying is Several years ago when I first Met George and Karl (this is when we used to have events in Camden) I imagined them to be quite young...just from the enthusiasm and youth of their posts. Of course when I met them they were a lot older than I anticipated (although still dashing and very kissable in a mature and distinguished way). Anyways several years on, Myself, Justyn, Karl, George, Hox, vicky and some others met for a drink and I said to Vicky "You know before I met Karl and George I didn't realise they were old!" They fell about in fits of laughter so at least they saw the funny side and I love them muchly!
