Manechester Wizards...

...formally known as Manchester Utd, the football club that ate itself. Actually, I think the Glazier take-over is good for everybody concerned. The US billionaire leprechaun gets his new toy, Sir Alex has the opportunity to depart with grace ('cause lets face it, in pure footballing terms, Utd under Sir Alex are yesterday's news), and all those Utd fans who are opposed to the take over can switch allegiance to their local club - ie, Reading, Plymouth, Exeter, Brighton - and save wadfulls of cash on travel and prawn sandwiches. Rio Ferdinand, Manechester Wizards' top quarterback, looks set to benefit too with a salary the size of the gross national product of Sweden.

All in all a good day at the office, I'd say.

Chin up, the beautiful game!

Only an American would call a football team 'Wizards'. How pithy.

I reckon Glazer must be an Arsenal fan. How else to explain the dire situation in which he has placed the club. Mind you United have done their bit to self destruct. Buying Wayne Rooney for an over-inflated price was an obvious blunder. Just compare the respective goals-to-transfer-fee ratios of Rooney and Andy Johnson. Off the top of my head Johnson is about 80 times better value for Palace than Rooney is for United.

Chin up abc footy lovers! I predict a 3-1 victory for the Arse today and a lot of prawn sandwiches thrown in the direction of the Glazer family...(ie, the director's box in Florida)

Oh bloody hell, "unmerchandise" then. I knew there was an extra "u" and "n", but for some reason remembered Hitch's original anagram as "merchandised". I don't think that IS what Hitch meant, Stormy. But he would have been right to. As you are (so why would there be any retribution?).

I heard he was going to move the team to the US and put it in the MLS out of Dallas Texas.

Dallas isn't far enough. The longest word you can make from 'Manchester United' is 'Merchandise'. They're not a football club - they're a retail outlet. They're getting what they richly deserve. p.s. Rumour has it that Everton's new shirt sponsors will be 7up. Or is it 7down? [%sig%]

Well I ain't a footbawl fan, but the prices those greedy bastards charge the kids for a wanky shirt is disgraceful. I hope they go broke.

>>>Just compare the respective goals-to-transfer-fee ratios of Rooney and Andy Johnson. Off the top of my head Johnson is about 80 times better value for Palace than Rooney is for United.<<< Hrm, yes Milton, if you simply count goals but what you must also factor in is this: How many goals has Rooney created for other players by: a) drawing off defenders to leave another striker free. b) supplying crosses that no other player could make. c) never giving up. Man Utd could sell him at a profit tomorrow. Andy Johnson shines because he is fed by other players ... a bit like Alan Shearer who owes his fame to the selfless talents of others (the two SAS partnerships) and his abilty to win and score penalties.

Wizards? No more red devils then? That would be a shame.

Every year, the Premiership has a player who scores a hatful of goals and everyone raves about them. Then they don't manage to sustain it. Kevin Philips for England, anyone? There's something dark afoot here. Manchester United usually make between 15-30 million profit a year. Assume Glazer only wants a 3% return (on his money and that he's only paying 3% interest on the borrowing) and that means he'll want to take £18 million a year out. He's said he'll make 20 million available for transfers, so that means every single year, Manchester United will be lucky to break even, and will probably make a loss. And that's assuming that Glazer would be happy with 3%. I imagine that if you're a businessman, you'll be aware that government bonds pay around 8 or 9 %. Now, banks don't tend to lend people £300 million, unless they're satisfied that the income streams will meet the borrowing. There's something afoot here. And I suspect that the chaos caused by ITV digital collapsing will be nothing compared to the impact Glazer will have on the 91 other league clubs. The board should have got organised earlier and got together a 25.1% stake, which would have been sufficient to ensure that Glazer couldn't attach the borrowing to the club. I'd have to say, with aching heart, that Manchester United had it coming. Alienating Magnus and McMana sealed their fate, the board didn't do enough to sweep up the existing shares and they've benefited for years from being a PLC. But I think this guy is going to be very, very, bad for football generally, whether he makes a success of it or a mess of it. I hope Fergie quits and urges disenchanted fans to go to Wigan to support a club who need the backing.

Wrong Hitch. The longest word you can get from Manchester United is "unmerchandised". Well, it probably isn't in the OED. But it *appears* to exist. Just google and see! Not that I'm a big fan of the PLC. But they're better than you. And so are we. DOWN ON THE REDSH*TES! WE'RE LOOKING DOWN ON THE REDSHITES! Those "where are you youze in the league" taunts (when we were crap, but often twatted you in the derby) are a comin' back to haunt ya now aren't they kidda. Oh, I'm sorry -- you have one up on us as you get to have your botties spanked by milanos due to an israeli-missile-technology discredited goal. Oh come on. We've waited for this.

Yes, you ARE wrong, Paul. The word 'unmerchandised' exists only on Googled sites run by the illiterate for the illiterate. Glad to see you've at last found places where you can feel at home. Further correction- It is not- Oh come on. We've waited for this. It is- Oh come on. We've waited for years and years and years for this. Enjoy it while you can. Moyes will be the next Man Utd. manager. What do you teach, Paul? Woodwork? [%sig%]

I'll get the kids to make you a nice fruit bowl for your sour grapes. I was going to say - and bigger goal posts for the opposition side at Anfield. But decided against it: talk about the pot and the kettle. I'll just bask in the glory of our defensive record. And hope noone brings up the Arse.

I'm creative with words. You are illiterate. Don't confuse the two. I get paid for writing creatively. You are just a loser who cannot spell.

>>And being creative with words isn't illiteracy. You of all people should know that. I demand you unsay those comments.<< But Hitch didn't say that being creative with words is illiterate. He merely pointed out that your anagram is wrong. Which it is. Two Ds (geddit) for you, matey. :0) I'm getting into these smiley things ... it seems to be a way of making a point without retribution.
