Incwriters, Promoter & E-Publisher, has branched out into Poetry Recordings, the E-Publisher based in Saddleworth, Lancashire has created a cottage industry in the foothills of the Pennines, fusing together contemporary poetry and traditional themes. It’s 6,000+ members from across the UK and abroad, manage the website, create opportunities for readers, writers and publishers across England. Utilising forums, chatrooms and free downloads to put readers in direct contact with writers and poets. David Constantine says of Incwriters, “This site is welcome alternative to the world of glossy promotion and gross retailing. Makes you feel that writing matters, and that it is thriving in all manner of ways”. Incwriters has become a one-stop shop for Literature outside of London.

The new audio CD, The Sea, from Incwriters (edited by Andrew Oldham) will give listeners the chance to hear live literature in the comfort of their home, their car or on their I-Pod. Incwriters over the next two years will target the growing I-Pod generation, they plan to, as volunteer manager and avid reader, Claire Summers, says, “Reclaim back dwindling audiences, and remind people that poetry should be heard, as well as read. Let’s stop poetry books rotting on shelves. The Sea will be the first step towards this”.

The Sea CD was recorded at Bradford Book Festival in 2006, and features the Yorkshire based award-winning poets, Pat Borthwick (published by Mudfog), Ian Parks (published by Waywiser) and Milner Place (published by Lapwing and Wrecking Ball Press). The Sea CD is snapshot of the title tour, which saw the three poets visited venues in Liverpool, Manchester, Ilkley, Whitby and Penrith. The tour fused together voices on the National Poetry Scene and the Grassroots Poetry Circuit. But let the poetry speak for itself, as Esther Morgan in the foreword, states, “There are narrative poems which present enigmatic characters like Ian Parks’ ‘The Guest’…or the subject of Milner Place’s ‘A Close Encounter’ who appears like the Ancient Mariner, haunted by the oceans he’s travelled. Pat Borthwick’s precise descriptions are as sharp-sighted as the gannets she describes in ‘Bempton Cliffs’”. Incwriters plans further Poetry CDs in 2008, featuring national and regional names in poetry and short fiction.

Incwriters was established in 2004 and is now run by its users, members who believe technology can work with established forms of publishing. Patron, Clare Pollard, says, “Whilst other sites seem to cater to comfortable niches, Incwriters is a network with serious breadth and ambition…an essential space for engagement with every aspect of our literary culture”.

Incwriters audio CD, The Sea with foreword by Esther Morgan, is available now from www.incwriters.co.uk £7.50 (approx 50 minutes).
