Specialist publisher have sent contract through - advice

Hi all,

Through reading this forum since, I found a specialist publisher who I thought might be interested in my only novel (so far), which I finished in 2008. Turns out, they are, and after sending in my book and a few emails exchanged, today they sent me a contract to sign if I want to go ahead. This is a huge compliment and I am very grateful.

However I would like to talk this through with someone who maybe has a little more experience in publishing than me.

The contract does not come with an advance and pays based on royalties only. That's fine - I was never getting an advance before and I figure this publisher will be able to sell more than I can on my own - but there are some other things in the contract that I need to consider.

I'd rather not discuss all the details publicly, so if anyone has a bit of time and experience perhaps you could message me and I could give more detail and benefit from your thoughts? Thanks a lot !

Make sure you do not have to pay one penny for anything, including cover, editing and promoting and make sure they do not take control of your copyright, even for a short period of time. Richard
