"When I'm Sixty-Four and Lovely Rita Meter Maid wouldn't get onto many people's lists of "Thirty Great Beatles songs" Au contraire, Emily, When I'm 64 would make my top twenty Beatles' songs at the VERY least. It cheesily plods round the masterful pop songwriting mind of McCartney lounging in Noel Coward's dressing gown, and shoots off on a blissful tangent with the gorgeously vocalised (and highly unexpected) middle eight. Though admittedly Lovely Rita Meter Maid is unadulterated shite. There's a lot of stuff there I like, and have learned to love: but the ones that shot me between the eyes, and ruled my life for a while: The Stone Roses (The Stone Roses) Nirvana (Nevermind) Pixies (Doolittle) De La Soul (Three Feet High And Rising)... The first three, there: not one f**king bad album filler on there. As for Radiohead: Paranoid Android, Kharma Police, No Surprises, and Lucky were all amazing off of Ok Computer -- the rest, yeah okay. The Bends: High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees (which I hated when it was a single, but adore now), Just, My Iron Lung, Street Spirit. Conclusion: The Bends had one more timeless classic. So Channel 4 viewers are wrong. But you've got to admire them for writing a heap of shit for their first album -- and a jewel they could never top (Creep) -- but soldiering on regardless to become massive.

The production quality of ok computer was relatively poor but it worked for the songs and I believe it's what made the album. It contains a rawness (mainly on the drum tracks) which I don't believe was intentionally created but was a result of the recording environment and the inexperience of the band as producers. I think they produced the album themselves, but I'm not too sure. I thought it a good choice. Just a shame to see bono - the king of rock cliche - in there.

and it's got something to do with radiohead being great songwriters too :) I thought Nick Drakes 'Five Leaves Left,' was a pleasant surprise but, there again, a timeless classic. Albums stripped off their era and still standing strong.

The Bends is far better than Ok Computer imo, though there is no disputing it's a fine album. Glad to see Jeff Buckley in there, though I wish they'd resisted having his mother on with her overacting. She gets right on my nerves. belonged to a Buckley newsgroup for years, and her posts to it were vile vile vile.

I missed the Jeff Buckley bit, except to see her mum at the end - I've got "Hallelujah" which is out of this world - a cynical old Leonard Cohen number handled with passion and intensity by a younger man, surely one of the best cover versions of anything ever! Is the rest of the album as good?

Yes neil... the Grace cd has come out in a special edition, I'd recommend that you get this, as it's fabulous. Interestingly, there is a track called "Forget Her" on it - this was originally scheduled for inclusion on the original cd, but Jeff pulled it, as he said that it was "too personal" and he foresaw bands like aerosmith destroying it in a lipglossed soft rock stylie. There were thousands of mp3's of the track circulating the internet though, and of course the fans downloaded it, interested to know what the song was like. It's a fabulous song, and fits Grace exactly. Jeffs mother at the time was in a rage, spitting feathers on the Buckley mailing list, about how people were ignoring Jeff's wishes, that they should be ashamed of themselves etc etc. So much so, that I almost (but not quite) felt guilty about downloading the track myself. And now, lo and behold, it's apeared on the special edition cd. His mother is a hysterical, attention seeking old bat, and *she* should be ashamed of herself. If it was too personal for original release and she was upholding his wishes as best she could, why allow it's incluion on this cd? Money grabbing old bat. I'm so loathe to add to her coffers that I refuse to buy it. If you want a copy, mail me, and I'll be glad to rip you a copy too.

I'm surprised if it was Radiohead that it wasn't "The Bends", but it is just a refreshing joy to find that for once it isn't Sergeant Peppers. (An album which, lest we forget, contains no less than two songs sung primarily by Ringo, and some songs that were clearly fillers - When I'm Sixty-Four and Lovely Rita Meter Maid wouldn't get onto many people's lists of "Thirty Great Beatles songs") It is perhaps a product of "OK Computer" being one of those albums which belong to the under 35 age group, rather than a classic album that 'belongs' to your parents age group. Is OK Computer actually a better album than Bridge over Troubled Water, Blood on the Tracks or Satanic Majesties? Probably not, but it is an album like Definitely Maybe or the Stone Roses that belongs to the voting audience.

I prefer "he Bends" to "OK Computer" both fab though. I didn't watch this but my top 10 would include these 2 plus Revolver by The Beatles Abbey Road by the Beatles Urban Hymns by The Verve The complete Stone Roses (although this is a compilation of two albums so its cheating. I saw the last 4 of this (best with these top 100s otherwise you find you've just spend 100 years watching it and all your friends have disowned you.) I love OK computer - but was suprised it wasn't the bends. Although I haven't listened to OK computer for ages, and hearing it in the background made me remember just how good it was/is. I was glad it wasn't a Beatles one - although I do love the Beatles at times, I do think people just say 'The Beatles' in answer to any music poll because it's sort of become the thing people do. I am listening to Dusty Springfield In Memphis right now. It's funny because I'm in a public library and it keeps making me imagine everyone around me doing the backing vocals, like a Dennis Potter thing.

My eldest sister was singing around a camp fire one year at the Appleby Horse fair (as is the tradition at these things) When the one who plays the banjo (Chas or Dave) came over and said he'd followed her singing from his caravan. He brought his banjo and they sat there and played/jammed until dawn with about thirty onlooklers and had a jolly whizzer time. She says it was a magical evening and that he was superb on the banjo. just a little story for you there.... Best albums? well for me they have to include 'People' by the Hot house flowers and 'Sign o' the Times' by Prince.

Yea George is right. No 'Nebraska' by Springsteen. One of the most dark and haunting albums ever made. A huge influence for the likes of Nick Cave, The Clash, Badly Drawn Boy,U2 and the Cowboy Junkies. 'The Joshua Tree' would never have been made witout this almost perfect album. Bruce recorded it at home on a beaten up old 4-track machine I think. What an album and what an oversight.
