Dallas

Not the show, the place. I've got an invite to go in a couple of weeks. Has anyone been there, or know the place? Will I have to put spurs on my slippers?

Last time I was in Dallas was about 1978. At the time I remarked that it looked like Los Angeles before every square inch of land had been filled with a building, parking lot, or road. I mentioned this to someone a couple of years ago and the response was: "The empty spaces are all filled now." I had several opportunities to move to Dallas back then for work. I passed them all up because, among other things, I just can not stand people speaking English with that stupid Texas accent. I want to reach out and slap their silly faces everytime they open their mouths to speak. Texas is also very hot and basically out in the middle of no place. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. Lyndon Johnson was a native Texan. That more or less says it all, I think. Still, on a short trip, you should have a nice time. Americans swoon over anyone with a British accent, so you will be a big hit everywhere you go, especially if you say nice things about Tony Blair. I know it will be diffcult, but nothing's impossible. finally: Do not mention anything you did in the 70s of a political nature.

For a really big tip on how to get on with the locals, just remember to tell them that the Alamo was an imperialist defence of WASP aggression and that it was a tragedy that the Mexicans lost it. Then run like hell.

I don't think they would even understand that Tony. Besides, the Mexicans won that battle. Just tell them Sam Houston was an Englishman.

When you get there, head immediately to Austin. The traffic is some of the worst in the country, you'll love the heat too.

I agree with RD - Austin is a haven of sanity in a truly terrible place. Try talking to the people in Dallas and you will be shocked by their fiercely redneck attitudes. You thought it was a joke - well, it isn't. They really believe it. Get out of there as fast as you possibly can.

Austin or San Antonio. Austin for the barbecue (MMMMMM!!) and San Antonio for the Mexican food. Don't talk to the natives; just eat to your heart's content...
