Passing of Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu aged 90 passed away early yesterday 26 Dec 2021 in Cape Town, a spiritual leader and spokesperson for injustice and the rights of black South Africans.

During the 1980s he played a key role in drawing national and international attention to the plight of black people, the evils of apartheid and abuse of human rights. He called for nonviolent protest and asked for the application of sanctions and economic pressure on South Africa by overseas countries. He was awarded the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize.

Archbishop Tutu was appointed chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1995 which investigated abuse and transgressions of human rights during apartheid.
