Dogville

We watched this the other night.
Wasn't till we were walking Ban afterwards that I realised I had been right behind Grace's decision to shoot every single resident of the town, and felt that I was horrible.
If it had been written as a challenge to make an airy fairy type feel that way about murdering 15 adults + some kids, even though they had acted only according to their natures, had done nothing that they considered wrong, it could not have done better
At the end, only the dog, Moses, had any morality, as he only growled to defend his property, never imposed himself on anyone else

Has anyone else seen this film?
What was it about really?

I saw Dogville when it was first out in cinemas and I'm glad I saw it that way. If I had seen it on video I think I would have been forced to switch it off and take a breather - having to watch it all the way through was, I see in retrospect, a very important element of my viewing. I felt exactly as you did about Grace's action at the end, and I know that if I watched it again I would feel the same way once more. Referring to my point above: one of the devices used was the endless slow torture of Nicole Kidman's character. A shorter, more abrupt or violent, abuse would not make for the same reaction from the audience at the end. I saw the film with my parents, who also had the same feeling, and so has everyone who I have spoken to about the film. Since this was obviously a goal of the film, I would say that makes it very successful. As for what it's about, one can only guess. There are a whole number of things. It is one of my favourite films, I think it's amazing.
