What I've never really understood is why there is a need for a completely custom-built site in the first place. There are other, very similar, sites with which most of us are familiar that use what appears to be rather bog standard off-the-shelf software. They don't have the volume that this site once had, but they almost never have major technical failures either, and certainly nothing that drags on for years. Even in the case of discussion boards, there are many free or nearly free software packages available. I've never heard of another site developing its own discussion forum software from scratch--excepting perhaps billionaire companies with infinite resources. Then again, its neither my money nor my decision, so whatever happens happens.

We've all used the new site. In fact this site has been redundant for years, we just never told you. Sorry you had to hear it like this.

We're slowly and steadily working towards a situation where we have a site that has all the necessary functions and isn't going to need to major overhauls and alterations every few months. All the main bits of the new site work well but some important bits aren't finished yet. Other aspects haven't been fully tested. Mark in particular has spent most of the last two years, responding to most users' technical queries with the honest answer "I don't know." We've got a chance to make sure that happens less often in the future. It's very important that we don't blow it.

So far, we've tried that approach twice. Both times it's been an unqualified disaster. Sometimes it's an idea to learn from your mistakes. We haven't had a fully functional site for approximately two years. Lots of damage has been done but, given the position we're in now, putting up a working site in a few weeks time will be a much idea than putting up an almost working site tomorrow. "Yeah why can't we go back to the old days when everything worked fine? The origanal model was the best should never have been modelled with." The internet is a very different place now to what it was five years ago. The new site will operate on the same basic principles as the original but will be.... well, newer.
