What to do?
What must the free world do about Iran?
Ahmadinejad, recently installed President of Iran hasn't wasted any time informing the world what his stance is viz a viz Israel, (and by inference, the whole non-moslem world). In the last 24hrs or so, the Iranian parliament(?) has embarked on a damage limitation excercise and tried to defuse what is becoming a serious problem for the country. Should the western world accept that the Iranian president is guilty of no more than a bad choice of words? Can Iran be trusted to follow a peaceful path? They claim their nuclear ambitions are strictly non-military and for the generation of power, and yet they refuse to allow international inspection of their nuclear facilities, which by all accounts they have spread widely across their country, and have even duplicated plants to ensure they can't be brought to a standstill. Is this what a peaceful country does? Should the world stand by wringing it's hands and praying that sanity will prevail? I have no doubt the very same people who were vociferous in their opposition to action against Iraq will start beating the same drum on this issue. At this point in time I have no strong personal position on Iran but believe that the UN MUST realise that if they don't do something positive themselves, under the umbrella of international agreement, then it will be no good screaming at a later date that this nation or that nation responded without UN support.
At the time Ayatollah Khomenei came to power (and what a nightmare he was!),Ahmadinejad was a young fanatical activist, now he's in charge.
NOW is the time for the UN to assert itself. Being weak and frightened just encourages anarchy.
So do we demand the UN act or do we do nothing until it's too late?
