Id cards are the best things ever by Jack Cade

recognising yourself in a piece of writing is not always comfortable. This really captures the 'middle classes' and their attitudes, and made me squirm.

A great piece of writing

Juliet

'Make it so I find it easy to daydream.’ What an acutely, painful line. This is very good. It is feels personal but not oppressively so. It's also rather sad. The revelation about the gun works well, particularly because you have set Benj up as Mister Average Middle Class. Trying to think of something critical to say... failing. Oh yeah - the title is misleading. But that's no biggy. Cheers for the flag, Joe
"Spares and Benj are typical of most educated young people in Britain in the year 2005." With names like that, I think it's more accurate to say that they're typical of characters in Blur songs during their Parklife/Great Escape period.

"With names like that, I think it's more accurate to say that they're typical of characters in Blur songs during their Parklife/Great Escape period." Yeah cos Blur are uneducated and working class aren't they. nobody
???
"Yeah cos Blur are uneducated and working class aren't they." Not as far as I know but I wasn't suggesting that they were.

at first i wondered if Spares hadnt gota id card, hence his name, spares....lol but then the writing caught me and I enjoyed the story. thanks maisie

maisie angel Guess what?  I'm still alive!

I'm a bit late to the party on this one but I having read the piece I wanted to say how much I enjoyed it. We've all been there of course. I was once told that any coversation takes place on three levels, what is said, what each thinks the other said and what they both meant. Perhaps there should have been fourth level, that of carrying on a conversation whilst thinking about something entirely different. This piece seems to me to illustrate that point superbly. The point about ID cards is interesting. Typical government speak....say one thing, do the opposite and then congratulate those they have just shafted on being so wise to as to have suggested the action in the first place! I'm a bit surprised that this piece didn't get "Cherried".
