It's a truly magnificent film. A small story: I was in LA a couple of years ago, standing outside a shop on Main Street, Santa Monica looking at some of the original robot costumes used in Metropolis which were displayed in the window. Another grey haired guy was doing the same thing. "Great film, wasn't it?" I said. "Yeah - fantastic," he replied and then "Hey, you're English". He explained that he had been living over there for a while, doing a bit of this and a bit of that in the film industry. We got to chatting and he suggested that we go for a beer at Rick's down the street. I had an hour until my next meeting so it seemed like a good idea. We went and got our beer and talked about politics in England, football - all that sort of stuff and then I noticed that a number of people in the bar were looking at my companion who said his name was Malcolm. Then I caught a glimpse of him out of the corner of my eye - and realised that he was Malcolm MacDowell. Ooer. Embarrassment all round. He thought it was very funny - we had another beer and I was late for my meeting. A lovely guy! And it was all down to Metropolis!

(No particular order) 1. Ben-Hur 2. The Odd Couple 3. Lord of the Rings (series) 4. The Princess Bride 5. The Producers 6. Raiders of the Lost Ark 7. Once Upon a Time in the West 8. Back to the Future (first one) 9. Groundhog Day 10. What About Bob? (Runners Up: Annie Hall, Sixteen Candles, Harry Potter series so far, The African Queen. I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch!) As far as Hitchcock goes... I loved Psycho ... don't like "The Birds" as much. For some bizarre reason, I regard "Family Plot" as one of my favorite Hitchcock movies. But the top winners for me has to be "Vertigo" and "Rebecca." (I also liked "North by Northwest," but not as much, for some reason.)

The best British film is and forever shall be Kind Hearts and Coronets. Does Billy Liar count as kitchen sink cos that's pretty damn fine too? Les Amants de Pont Neuf? I remember really, really enjoying it but I can't remember exactly why now ... Brassed Off is great fun. Especially the joke about how/why god created tories... ... why don't channel four/bbc2 show foreign language films any more???
