Microsoft Word 2007 - Beta

Ok, a geek post, but a post no less....

The latest version of Word, that is Word 2007, is now available as part of the Office Suite for download for you to test and use. It's a beta version, which is to say it will run to Feb 1st 2007 and then turn into a viewer. It's not complete, some stuff may not work as expected etc. Anyway.

They changed the way it looks so completely that people who have learned on any previous version of Word, will immediately uninstall it and use OpenOffice instead. In one fell swoop Microsoft have alienated a long time Word user.

The big beef is the ribbon. This fisher price style creation cannot be changed for an earlier "look", there is NO menu bar anymore, so forget about looking for comforting menus. People who have created custom toolbars (like me) for formatting scripts will not be able to use them. In fact I am not sure you can actually create a custom ribbon box.

Apparently, the designers have redesigned Word based on feedback from users. It sucks. It sucks so bad i will not be upgrading.

I'm still using Word 2002. It does everything I want it to, so what's the point of changing? Microsoft may add extra things and new facilities but my needs remain the same. Bill Gates can kiss my arse, he won't be getting any cash from me.

...or me. Until they invent a programme that can transliterate my conscious and unconscious thoughts, putting in the punctuation and grammar and applying auto-genius, I don't see the point of upgrading. jude "Cacoethes scribendi" http://www.judesworld.net

Oh...but Jude...Microsoft has already done that. They are called "Wizards" and the little friend, Mr. Paperclip the winking helper. Visit me http://www.radiodenver.org/

Apparently the current version of Office (XP i think) won't operate on Windows Vista, unless there's an emulator or second hard drive fitted on your pc with xp on it. But THAT won't make much difference because you won't be a proper Vista user without a HD ready monitor. I just spent 1500 quid on a new pc and it still doesn't have one. Yo queiro pancakes!
Mr Paperclip – aghhh. Turning him off isn’t good enough. He should be banged up along with that creepy blue puppet from the fabric conditioner adverts. I reckon puppet guy has to register with his local police.
Aww, I think Mr Paperclip's kinda cute. If I had my way I'd still be using Windows 95, only a faster version. But then I'm also a proponent of woodburning stoves and horse n' buggy transportation, so I suffer under 'new' technology... I bloody hate the 'autoformat' thingmie. When writing reports it's always 'helping' me with bullet points and such, to the point where I'm tempted to hurl the VDU out the large plate-glass window onto the children playing outside.
My somewhat hysterical outburst starting this thread was occasioned by a simple luddite reaction. I am getting used to the new interface of Word 2007. It's still a test version, and may change before release next year. ++ I didn't know that Office (older version) would break on Vista.
