My own 'Writers' Guild'

I'm really interested in setting up my own writers' group at my school. However my organisational skills are hardly legendary, and I have no experiece at all in this kind of thing. I would really appreciate any advice from people who are members of writers' groups around the country on how their local group works, or any other good ideas and helpful hints!!!

I really don't want to make it too formal as kids are going to give up their lunchtimes to come, and I need to appeal to the whole spectrum of secondary school ages and abilities. If it becomes like an English lesson people will leave!

It will be a 'no teachers allowed' zone, an informal gathering of young people with plenty of coffee and cakes with (hopefully!) lots of quality work....however beyond that I don't really have a clue. Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

How about some incentives? Why not do a little research and find some young writers' competitions that give good prizes? It helps to have goals and starting points. Initially, why not advertise a meeting and I'm sure that kids with real drive will want to take over. Ideas, leaflets, competitions...it all starts to sound interesting............. Then it will just snowball.

Watch out for youngABCtales.com, there are writing notes etc. on there and although it may be a little young for some of your secondary school colleagues it will be useful. It launches on September 26th but the site in its infancy is up there now.
