Class...What is it?

Dear All

I like red wine and I am pretty fussy about what I drink.
I have friends who live in Islington.
I give to Charity.
I have wooden floors and over twenty Miles Davis albums

But.

I was born and raised in Basildon from a family of labourers.
I never eat pasta until I was twenty.
I never went on a plane until I was twenty-two.

Am I a working class man living with middle class trappings?
Am I working class with a desire to be middle class?
Am I middle class but living in denial?
Am I Nick Hornby or Tony Parsons.
Am I Blue Peter or Magpie?
Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings?

What are you?

Discuss

Ralph

For the record I like to think that I am working class living with middle class trappings

You missed out sun dried tomatoes and a coffee percolator. You have sold out to the forces of conservatism, Ralph. Me, am bona fide working class mate. Even live in a council flat (ok. ex-council flat). So any charity would be welcome. Ps. I am going to Basildon tomorrow for a meeting. Is it nice?

Class is defined by personal and moral integrity not income/job etc. The term working class is now obsolete. There are as far as I am concerned only three classes of people. 1. Underclass 2. Middleclass 3. Aristocracy/ lucky bastards 1. Underclass:- Defined by (either one or more of these) lack of personal, moral and financial responsibility. An example of lack of personal responsibility would be not utilising the free education system in this country to better oneself and make one a more productive person An example of lack of moral resposibility would be comitting crimes such as street robbery, or bringing up ones children to do so. An example of lack of financial responsibility is deliberately remaining unemployed when work is available to you and having children (either deliberately or through lack of FP health care) when one cannot afford them. 2. Middle classes are those who do their best for themselves, their family and society as a whole both individually. This is done entirely on one's own merit. 3. Aristocracy / lucky bastards are the fortunate few who don't have to work hard to better themselves they are born into or by chance gain financial and or social status. These include the royal family and lottery winners. Class is nothing to do with Islington/ coffee beans and dress sense, they are merely superflous fashion ideologies. jude

Jude I knew you would rise to it. How is that view over your beloved River Lea river this morning. See you on Saturday for beer, wine and giggles. Ralphie x

> having children (either deliberately or through lack of FP health care) when one cannot afford them. Nearly got me there. Nearly rose to it. Recognised the wind up just in time. Eat cheese and tomato sandwich. Drank tea. Almost relaxed.

Stu, If this sensible rule was followed, I would not exist because my parents couldn't afford me (along with my 5 siblings), so maybe you should approve! Ralphie, The Lea when viewed through the bay window in my front room is always quite moving but especially when its misty. However go a little downstream and one can see the marvellous east-end spectacle of dumped shopping trolleys and stolen mopeds. Still the ducks don't seem to mind much! looking forward to Sat j

Under Nazi ideologically I would be sent to the gas chamber for being only half caucasian (my impure half is cape coloured south african), so maybe you should approve of this too.
