Stephen - I love that Oldham accent - and the Scottish one - and find the London one such a turn off!

S.d...what do you mean by a London accent?. The cockney accent (spoken by anyone born in hearing distance of Bow bells)and its deriative the mockney accent which is also known as an "Essex accent" is foul...not even English in my opinion. But many Londoners now have an estuarine accent like mine. Because of people moving around, accents in London and the home counties (Kent, Essex, Middlesex and to some extent Surrey, Sussex and Herts) are no longer defined by regions but by socioeconomic and cultural factors.

"Aug! away with yay Lassie! I Dinny ken what you mean? Translation: Oh come now Jude, are you suggesting that there is no logistical relationship, between the derivative of the Essex accents and the English language? Surely you are mistaking?

I like the poshy way of the homecounties i dont know there something regal about it that is just nice, proper english if you will. I think it sounds nice with the birds anyway. It always raises laura !!! I dont know why i picked the oldham acccent to define as a bad one. I think it was the time i spent in blackpool (1 year) and well i got to know a few people from oldham, nice enough people really, the accent was just a bit flat, i think, although that obvioulsey doesnt mean everyone speaks flat from oldham. Jude what happens when you get a minger moving to surrey. Do they get the cold shulder for speaking mockney or are they gently told to redefine there accent ???

My mum has broad (and quite exagerated often) Glaswegian accent whereas my Aunt has cultivated posh Edinburgh Jean Brodie clip (both brought up in the gorbals). They have the most amazing fights, usually with my mum accusing my aunt of being a snob, shouting things like "Yer all fur coat and nae knickers, you are!" or "D'ya think I came up the Clyde on a bike?"

Gozzle. I was born in Dundee and brought up in Glasgow. We lived at the Galowgate until i was about 8 years old. After that, I was about up in England but travelled back to Paisley on a regaler bases. So my accent is still broad but with a good vocabulary and softened with the influence of the English. Of course, the minute I hear a Brade Scottish accent, or get loud, the good old Glasgow boy comes out to play.
