Europe's Best Writers' Site?
Yes, it's our own trumpet-blowing neighbours - UKA.
According to themselves.
And they only charge £5 if you want to be moderated/deleted.
Don't all rush at once...
...whaaaa...who said that.......?
It does seem to be a tad masochistic.
One of the best aspects about this site is the number of overseas writers who contribute and many of them are excellent. Charging £5 would be a retrograde step particularly for those from Asia and Africa to whom that's probably a lot of money. Don't go down that path please!
I've been on UKAuthors recently and, yes it has a lot of good features. But the marking and the commenting is a bit sycophantic - nearly everything gets 8, 9 or 10 out of 10 which quite honestly doesn't mean much. Ironically the only author who seems to get very low "marks" is Sue Simpson (Sooz)which is an insult 'cos she's probably the best writer on the site! Maybe her explicitness offends.
The rating on UKA is very sycophantic and ridiculously exaggerated. We do have some good writers on there but most of the 8, 9, 10 scores are rubbish. If anyone dares to rate either low or zero there's a row. they even start threads in support of the victim.
well it is bad to rate low and not comment or at least pm, right? I haven't read the whole thread--
by the way when will it be possible again to rate on abctales?
look the good thing regarding ukauthors is that it combines the rating and the commenting. the bad thing is that not everybody is willing to rate low and comment. there are some people who don't hesitate at all to decimate somebody's stars and never bother to give feedback.
on abctales you can only rate/// let's say you feel the need to rate very low, but even then it's highly unlikely to send an email to the writer simply to tell him/her it was you (or create a thread to say I WAS THE ONE WHO RATED ZERO YOUR WORK MISTER), it doesn't make sense! because you will have to explain why you did that, and you must have some valid reasonable arguments for that not to mention to give constructive feedback, right? and if you can't explain why you will seem spiteful or unable to express your views, so people will not listen to you. very self-destructive I don't recommend this method.
so what can possibly make a reasonable fellow writer to rate low and leave without a comment or explanation on any site? such a thing destroys the fellowship and the exchange of ideas/advices.
anyway I think we worry too much for unimportant things. Abctales is Abctales and Ukauthors is Ukauthors. you and I can benefit from both or none, it depends on how we will use both sites.
(oh and I don't think there is a perfect site, with a perfect rating, perfect feedback, perfect members, perfect readers, perfect editors, perfect attitude... sites are like humans and like everything else on this planet... nevertheless we can evolve to achieve perfection and share our views in good faith)
The rating's are just a way of saying you liked something. If you get your piece rated 5 times with an 8 or 9, it's just five people's way of saying, "Thanks, I liked reading that." And, likewise, low marks are usually just an attempt to put someone down. That's just the way people are.
The comments box is where it's at. Even if someone just says what aspects they like about a poem, that's useful.
Get over it, trolls.
