DETAILS OF EVENTS

1) Friday, 12 May, 9p.m. Edinburgh "Cowgate Cartoon" event at the Left Bank (venue details here: http://theoracle.co.uk/lo/live_music_venue_specific.cfm?VenueName=The%20... )

The Cowgate Cartoon events have moved from Wednesdays to Fridays. These are fast-paced and free evenings featuring a diverse assemblage of performance poets and musicians You never know exactly what's going to happen but it's always entertaining. On 12 May I'll be performing some humorous verse, including a piece about the "Cowgate Cartoon" cocktail.

Contact the fab pianist and organiser Will Pickvance if you want to take part:

2) Sunday, 14 May, 4 p.m. Aberdeen, King's College, Eddie Gibbons, Anne MacLeod & John Easton.

Details here: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/word/programme/

Anne MacLeod's beautiful novels The Dark Ship and The Blue Moon Book have been described as 'feminine literature that delves deep and won't lie down'. John Easton's recently released poetry collection Asking After Hearts has won critical acclaim. The ever-popular poet Eddie Gibbons completes this celebration of writers working in the North-east. One of his poems recently appeared in the Scotsman: http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/critique.cfm?id=679082006 and you can read about one of his recent books here:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1902831659/203-3045174-3323107

As this is the first time these local writers have been featured (I think) it would be good if they were supported.

Entry is by ticket only, so please book:
http://www.abdn.ac.uk/word/programme/bookingform.php

It's quick, free and easy. If you're not sure if you can go the advice is to book anyway!

3) Tuesday, 16 May, 8.30 p.m. Aberdeen, Enigma Cafe Bar, Eddie Gibbons, Alison Dunne and Eric Swanepoel. Free.

Full details here: http://www.wordfringe.co.uk/E1620ExactlyHere.htm Don't worry, I won't play the fiddle!

4) Saturday, 20 May, 7 p.m. Edinburgh, Dance Base. Les Murray (deservedly celebrated Aussie poet!)

This MUST NOT BE MISSED!!! I have had the privilege of hearing him before and can highly recommend this event.

Peter Burnett, gifted novelist ( look for "Odium" and "The Machine Doctor" on this page: http://www.argyllpublishing.co.uk/fictionpoetry.html ) and co-organiser of the Thirsty Lunch events (see Item 6) says:

"We're celebrating the return of Thirsty Lunch [see below], with an Evening of Poetry by Award Winning Australian poet Les Murray on Saturday 20th May at 7pm at Dance Base (Scotland's National Centre for Dance: http://www.dancebase.co.uk/content.asp?ContentId=1 ) 14-16 Grassmarket, Edinburgh.

Tickets are available from Dance Base 0131 225 5525: ££9(££7), and this includes wine!

If there was ever a superstar poet, it was Les... Spread the good news!"

5) Thursday, 6 July, Canterbury, Canterbury Christ Church University, exact time and place TBC, Eric Swanepoel on the subject of "Saving the World and Being Happy"!

The revolution might be starting! Having read the political romcom, Saving the World and Being Happy (The Computer Ager), John Cornwall, a lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University ( http://www.canterbury.ac.uk/education/professional-development/johncornw...) has invited Eric to speak on the political ideas the novel contains. Further details of this event will be announced nearer the time, but you can read about the book here: http://hometown.aol.co.uk/rericswan/index2.html and download an essay summarising the political content here: http://www.beinghappy.info

You can read about the author here: http://hometown.aol.co.uk/rericswan/author.html

Saving the World and Being Happy is available from Word Power Books: http://www.word-power.co.uk/catalogue/141371756x

6) 6 to 20 August 2006, 1p.m. Edinburgh, The Jazz Bar, 1a Chambers Street. Thirsty Lunch

More information from Peter Burnett:

"And as you see, THIRSTY LUNCH is back this year. Bigger and better and rather alarmingly, with proper funding and a PA. I'm not convinced on the PA, but everything else about it is looking good."

THIRSTY LUNCH
Thirsty Lunch is back at Edinburgh Festival Fringe!

6 to 20 August 2006 at The Jazz Bar 1a Chambers Street ( http://www.thejazzbar.co.uk/ )

1pm for 50 minutes of free, live literature.

Here's a mention in the Scotsman of last year's event: http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/critique.cfm?id=1735212005

The word is that the mysterious and secretive author of a shocking book called Pet Hates (The Ugly Truth About Pets And Vets), to be published at the end of the year, might be giving a preview reading as part of this event. You never know.
