Feedback wanted

I've recently started a new fiction project set in a Survivors type, post apocalyptic world. I've written two versions of an initial chapter and would love some feedback on what direction to take it.

The first version is set several years after some kind of plague and can be found here:

The second version is set only a week or two after society has finally collapsed, and can be found here:

I'd really love to know which version you prefer, and get your general thoughts on each. In return, I'd be happy to do the same for anyone else.

Hi, T,Crask, I would first like to congratulate you on a work of heart a really well thought out and well written story and both versions are very good and I also like the sea version more but thats because I love the sea but its so hard to choose from well done and i know what ever one you choose it will be great. I would also like to add its writers like you that make me want to quit lol has i am no were near your creativity but admire those of you that are. good luck.
