Complaint to the Universe re: Writer of the Week
it simply is Not Fair that someone who is 24 can write prose like Julian Simpson does ...
his Hotel Metropole is fabulous ... dark and sexy ... has to be one of my favourite things on the site ...
only 24 ... watch out ...
*stomps off wailing and tearing out hair*
Well, I just read Hotel Metropole. Personally, I would never allow a woman with a razor blade anywhere near me, regardless of her explanation. The way I read this story, both of the characters are quite sick, probably in a fettishist kind of way, and at the end, the guy is about to be castrated with the razor blade. Dark, yes, but sexy? Not for me.
Then again, it could form the basis of a novel along the lines of Jim Thompson's stuff from the 40s and 50s. All it needs is a financial motive, a dead husband, perhaps some incest along the way, a crooked cop, and David Lynch to direct the film adaptation.
Good piece, but I would prefer not meeting either of those characters in real life, though something tells me I already have and just don't know it yet.
He is bloody good isn't he ? I must say, I was a bit shocked he was only 24. I've got hopes for a few people here that I might get signed copies of their books later on (or maybe a dedication 'To Andrew, who saw and encouraged' ?) , and Julian is one of those.
yes bloody good ... and worse still he is a very nice person too ...
a recipe for success ... and i wish him luck ...
I must say I find this all terribly ageist. I know many people who are 24 and they are no worse for it.
However, if, when the years pass and my "youngster" status wrinkles away, and I ever fulfill the dream of becoming a full-time writer, I will certainly not forget those who were there at the start.
By the way, special mentions will be given to anyone with enough cash to assist self-publishing....
*looks chastened*
it was only jealousy julian ... honest ...
If I can arouse jealousy in you fish then I feel truly honoured.
Oh, meant to add, but I still don't see what being 24 has to do with anything.
quite right julian ... it has nothing to do with it ... i am sure literary history is littered with examples of people who produced stunning works at a tender age ...
it was merely an ageist grumble ... of which i now feel duly ashamed ...
Look at Mozart, Fish.
Or, there again, better not, eh?
