I know shit happens...
..but some shit passes us by, well at least me. This story made me feel ashamed that I didn't already know more about this.
I knew lynchings happened, but not to this extent and not until 1960 and I certainly didn't know that the Senate blocked the federal law for so long.
[%sig%]
;o)
Yeah I knew this. Seems - well, not *acceptable* in the 1800's, but at least distant and therefore removed far enough from how we perceive ourselves as civilised now...but, in the 1960's it is too close for comfort. Dreadful.
The thing that also shocked me when I discovered it, was the blood of black and white men was separated in WW2, lest the white soldier's pure blood become tainted. Incredible when you consider that the entire american peoples are made UP of so many different races. Pure is one thing their blood isn't.
None of us are free from racist guilt when our countries histories are revealed, but 1960? Makes me feel bad does that.
I think you'll find there have been lynchings since the 60's. I spend time in the deep south and the idea that maybe racism no longer exists is a myth.
