A view of the road from the other side of the ditch.

It is looking more and more to me as though Europe has finally adopted one more American marketing tactic.

You've got to admit, when it comes to putting together effective marketing gimmicks, American Televangelists have pretty much defined the methodology over the past 40 years.

(read more about famous American fake televangelists here)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_evangelist_scandals

So, Julian Assange figured this out, but with a twist. Instead of preying on millions of people who want to believe in God, he's found a new cult of followers and has managed to create an entirely new cottage industry in Europe.

Hactivism...

The Internet Whistle Blower industry.

Like any good televangelist, one must define good and evil, and in the world of internet whistle blowing, good is anybody who admires a good dose of posturing mingled with anarchy. Evil can be defined as anything American.

So, now we see the beginning of the new industry. WikiLeaks now has a competitor, OpenLeaks. And there is Brussels Leaks.

American Entrepeneur, PT Barnum (Of Barnum & Bailey Circus Fame) was once quoted as saying.

"There's a sucker born every minute"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There%27s_a_sucker_born_every_minute

Which means there will always be a way for con men to make a buck.

Congratulations Europe. You're becoming more American every day.

Yes it is hard to understand why America is so terrified of a bunch of misguided euronerds.
Wow....that's weird. Cleaning up my typing a bit and next thing I know, I'm in Mexico sitting on the beach. Never mind.... Tony, you still running the same forum software you upgraded to 5 years ago? It's acting weird dude.

Beg your pardon. You're obviously comfortable with Wikileaks. My impression from a distance is that many US politicians and media commentators are having hysterics. I guess it's all just show business.
I have no problem with the concept of WikiLeaks. I have a problem with Assange, I think he's a fake and self promoter. I'm a strong believer in freedom of the press and all that happy horse shit. I fear Assange will do more harm than good though. When you see celebrities jumping on the bandwagon, ie...Michael Moore and such, there's a major hint that it's more about publicity and self promotion than anything else. There's money to be made off of this...big bucks. Better get in on the ground floor. The hysterical people seem to be the over-reactors who think they can dictate how world governments will behave by trying to shutdown PayPal. Fools....most of whom have no real clue of how things work. We also have some "amongst" us those who have two faces about it. On the public side, they are all rah-rah-rah for Assange and WikiLeaks, but on the private side, they don't practice what he's preaching and are not at all prone to practice free speech or openness, and are in fact totalitarian at the root level. Lots of what you are hearing in Europe and the US is speaking with "forked tongues" I'm afraid. Visit me http://www.have-camera-will-travel.com/

I have no doubt Assange is a flawed human being. I have yet to meet a perfect one. He may be everything you say but he has balls, unlike most of the spineless puppets who call themselves journalists these days. I don't know what motivates Michael Moore. More than just money I suspect.
I agree with the statement "he has balls." I've known lots of guys with balls though, many of whom are now dead. I have balls, don't need to borrow his to find my warm fuzzy place in the world. Michael Moore. In it purely for the publicity. The Al Sharpton of liberal celebrity causes. You'll have to look up Al Sharpton, he's another magnificent American creation. I think Assange knows the risks he's taking. I don't need to look up Al Sharpton. He does come across as an old fashioned huckster. Moore strikes me as having more integrity but of course he uses American marketing methods to get attention. Nothing else seems to work there. You seem to have something against self-promotion. Isn't that what we all do here in different ways? I for instance have a book to sell but I don't mention it every time I post.
How is your book selling? I have absolutely nothing against self-promotion. I promote my business services all day, every day. I do believe in truth in advertising though. I believe in having good ethics in my business practices. I don't take peoples money and not provide the service they paid for. I don't have other people doing my dirty work and suffering the consequences while I enjoy only the benefit. Visit me http://www.have-camera-will-travel.com/

My book sells very slowly....maybe one or two copies a month. It's OK though because I don't have many copies left and don't plan to print any more. All the slagging of Assange seems to me like an attempt at distraction. I agree with Mangone about it...I'm more interested in the actual leaks and any effect they have than Assange's character.
Everything is a distraction! The only thing that is real is what happens when you walk out your door. But, I find the whole thing to be exceptionally entertaining. I'm more interested in how he's going to fair in Sweden with the courts and accusations of the two women he's managed to piss off. Something tells me he's dumber than mud with women and these women know how to work the system. It is inspiring me to create a whistle-blower satire web site. Gotta get in on the ground floor of this stuff ya know. Visit me http://www.have-camera-will-travel.com/

It is entertaining. I don't think anybody comes out of it looking very good. The US looks like a doubletalking bully, Sweden looks churlish and Assange looks like a twerp for getting involved with those women. He must have been thinking with the little brain. Now I'm interested to see if the British Home Secretary will sign the extradition order.
URL secured! Any good satire writers here? I'm serious. Visit me http://www.have-camera-will-travel.com/

I suspect it's Assange and Wikileaks you want satirized. Sarah Palin would make a good subject but reality is hard to beat.
I intend to satirize the entire concept of whistle-blowing web sites. Assange is a good place to start. Sarah Palin is fair game. With wikileaks we have fake journalists doing real whistle-blowing and hiding behind constitutional amendments and such. I'm turning the concept around and using real journalists to do fake whistle-blowing, hiding behind constitutional amendments and such. Like I said, ground floor. It could be big, we could all be thrown in prison in places like Hungary or Columbia or some place better perhaps. I'm hopeful that it'll get me a free trip to Moscow or some other former communist state where I can schmooze with impressionable 20 yr old European chicks who think hairy old Americans are sexy. Lawsuits a plenty, guest appearances on late-night television shows, you name it, the sky is the limit. The new website is called... AMERILEAKS.ORG Don't try browsing it yet, as the DNS configuration isn't completed, but it's on my server and I'll be working on getting the DNS up right today, in between runs to the bathroom that is. Those burritos I had last night are really coming back to haunt me today. If you think you can write, contact me through my web site below. Can't pay you but we can ask for donations through PayPal and what ever comes in will go towards a group trip to the Caribbean once a year. I'm sure we can convince some idiots around the world to give us money. Assange did it with nothing more than a bad hair style. Visit me http://www.have-camera-will-travel.com/

Here's the landing page for AMERILEAKS.ORG (also registered as AMERILEAKS.COM) http://www.amerileaks.com http://www.amerileaks.org I think I'm going to buy up as many XXXXXleaks.com site url's as I can find. There is going to be major cash involved with this sometime down the road. Capitalist and proud of it. Visit me http://www.have-camera-will-travel.com/

Just an idea for your attempt to corner the leaks market - good luck by the way. How about hollywoodleaks - for spoof stories about film stars (some of which might even turn out to be true). It would certainly attract large numbers of 'm'learned friends' looking to make a buck or two out of the libel laws. Helvigo Jenkins

Oh, I'm sure I will have a number of leaks bureaus. All I need are bureau chiefs. We aim to be an equal opportunity offender. Share your state secrets at... http://www.amerileaks.org

TMZ are way ahead of you h jenkins... http://www.tmz.com/
Naaaaa....not at all like TMZ. I can't associate myself with Paparazzi, as I'm a real photographer in real life and have real celebrity clients and such. It's an alter-ego thing, more like Austin Powers is to James Bond. I'm "Heart & Soul", the secret leaker guy divulging secret things from my Colorado mountain hideout (think Ted Kaczynski, only better looking and smarter and more worldly and with a conscious),errr.... well, nothing like Ted Kaczynski actually. You get the idea. Share your state secrets at... http://www.amerileaks.org
