ABCDID2

Andrew reference to ABCDID on Emma's thread has prompted me to re-start the original Desert Island Disc thread I started in the days of yore.

Come on you lot what are your top eight in 2005?

I'd list mine first but I doubt anyone has heard many of them or even the performers, so I'll wait until i can slip them in unnoticed.

Returning to the beach: I mused that donkeys don't have a good union. I say this because in spite of looking sweet in their lovely blue sadle blankets with matching nose-bags - it turns out that they only get a couple of hand-fulls of yellowy-green dried grass for lunch in spite of earning £2 a throw for a short, swift, stroll a few yards down the beach with a toddler on it's back and proud parents in tow beaming with pride at their child's equestrian talents. Still they do get an hour to eat hay while the sun shines.

I've been stuck in 'stand-by' mode all day and no amount of super-strong coffee seemed to help so I decided to lever myself back out the door and return to the beach. I was surprised to see that in addition to the several groups of regular 'blue' donkeys a new group with tatty purple saddle blankets had staked out a bit of beach. No matching nose-bags for these poor beasts just a few 'beaten up' looking plastic buckets. I wondered if these were owned by amateurs, trying to make the odd few quid, until I noticed a very professional sign, at the point where they turn round, which read - 'Donkey Concession No Ball Games Allowed On This Part Of The beach'. I thought the beach belonged to everyone - but maybe not.

Floyd, nice one, how could I forget 'Breathe.' Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden has to be the song that reminds me of my youth the most. The video is excellent too and so poignant in todays 'climate.' Book has to be Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac. Blah! Treat: um, a marks and sparks toffee and pecan pie with double cream :)

Look forward to Liana's selection... she has great taste in music (if not men). Last thing I liked was White Stripes, Seventh Nation Army... I don't really listen to enough contemporary stuff. Most of the rest would be classical and mainly Mozart.

I'm out for a meal on the 2nd, thanks anyway. It will be a treat for acoustic guitar lovers. I first saw Guy Clark play live at the Cambridge Folk Festival around 20 yrs ago, he's brilliant. Most people would be familiar with his songs even though they may not have heard of him. His most famous being 'LA Freeway', recorded by many artists. Martin Carthy and his wife Norma Waterson I have known personally for the best part of 35yrs, and Martin Simpson since he first burst on the folk scene 30 yrs ago. He used to live on Bourbon Street and I visited him there when in New Orleans in 1999. I have seen him since then as he now lives in Sheffield.

I dont like any kerouc. People only say they like him because they think it's cool and shows some kind of funky intelligence. It doesn't, it shows sheep mentality. Anyone that quotes a floyd song is already falling down in the cool stakes, so they need all the help they can get. Baaaa maxwell, baaaa.

well now just hang on there a sec. there are people who can enjoy that book for it's quality etc and not just because someone else told them it was cool. don't assume that Maxwell is a sheep, he may have come across the book and fell in love with it. I just happen to hate it but that's just me.

I put this on another thread, but I guess, really, it belongs here.... Okay...my eight songs I would take on a desert island...(if it was today, this is bound to change otherwise).. There would be enough to sing loudly to, dance widly to, and be sentimental to. Great. Good Feeling - Travis Play Dead - Bjork Thoughts of a Dying Athiest - Muse Homeward Bound - Simon and Garfunkel Teenage Kicks - The Undertones Now or Never - Lisa Ekdahl Jumping Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones Thank you for the Music - Abba My luxury items would be a piano, so I could play lots of tunes and sing along like Billy Joel and also a book of Mozart piano concertos so I would never need to leave the island anyway, because I would be more than happy bashing them out for the rest of my life. Do I get 2 books? If so, The Catcher in the Rye and Shakespeare's Sonnets. Or the Great Gatsby. I might swap Jumping Jack Flash or Play Dead for the Mc Solaar classic - Paradisiaque - because if that ever comes on in a club (if I'm ever in one) it makes me smile the biggest smile ever and drunkenly try and rap along in French.

But I complete forgot Nina Simone... sheesh....and Nick Cave.... How could I forget Nick CAVE????? Do You Love ME? by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds would be good to jump around to and sing at full pelt. Are You the One (that I've been waiting for) is a beautiful song, but would probably leave me a bit blubby if I was living by myself on a desert island. That's why I hate these things. It would take a life time on a Desert Island to think of a definitive list.

Jack Kerouac. Hmm...I was sampling wavs in halion and one wav in particular happened to be a spoken word clip by one Herbert Huncke. I became intrigued by old Herbert and decided to research him a little, and low and behold, I found the beats. Jack was the first beat I read thoroughly. Dharma Bums has a vision that I can relate to. Funky intelligence? hahahahaha

Ive been thinking about this on and off for ages.. and its funny how often a persons choice alters. This morning I am listening to a cd that i made a while back, and every song on it I adore, but I think oly the jeff buckley one made the original list I made ages ago. Some of my original list I wouldnt give cd space to now. This cd goes - 1. Rise, P.I.L 2. Your Ghost, Kristen Hersh and Michael Stipes 3. Kasabian, LSF 4. Chikinki, Ether Radio 5. Foo Fighters, Everlong (acoustic) 6. Jeff Buckley, Lover you should've come over 7. Interpol, A Time to be so small 8. The Perishers, Trouble Sleeping 9. Dirty Vegas, Days Go By (acoustic) 10. No.1 Crush, Garbage So, should I have to rush off to the desert island today, thats the one I'd take with me. Book - Cowboys are my Weakness, Pam Houston (plus Alan Bennetts Writing Home hidden under my hat) Luxury Item, my best mate Martin, because he knows how to catch fish and has never irritated me EVER. (a Very Rare Thing)

Andrew! I think you are Bonkers mate (you would have to see the Awesome thread). Only meant, if you followed the forums, that is how it would appear so. I think Liana is Bonkers too.. actually. I am not great on nostalgia, but must try and play this game properly so will put my mind to it. There is a Pink Floyd Tune in it somewhere 'Wish you were here' or somesuch, 'Baby Light my fire' is that the Doors?, who is that old geezer who sang 'It is a wonderful world'.. the words are just brilliant and true if listened to carefully. Then there is something from the early Massive Attack albums to do with an Angel, though there are a few others. There is a Bhuddist chanting cd that I have somewhere that is deliriously repetitevly delicious... and Mozart whose music just fills me with awe every time. Actually, I'd rather just take a radio then I can be surprised from time to time. Luxury item would be a big blob of plasticene (presuming one is not allowed to take a Fergal). I'd never get bored. Book. A dictionary me thinks...
