El Classico

Real Madrid 1 Barcelona 3 El Classico. There are not many games that could make me leave the pub on a Saturday night. There are lots of Celtic games that could drive me to the pub. The problem, of course, is I’m already there. El Classico has 500 million viewers and 80 000 fans in the stadium. As the commentator kept telling us these are the two best footballing teams in the world and they have the best players in the world. Messi, of course, in number one. There’s nobody better and he does what Messi does, which is pick up the ball and run with it, past three, past four defenders, as he did in the last game at that shrine to football, the Santiago Bernabeau, or that might have been the last game, or the game before that. He does it so often that I can’t be quite sure. What is certain is he is the number one player in the world. But, to be honest, he was a bit flat here. Barcelona lost a crazy goal after twenty seconds, with the keeper making a major kick-out error and indirectly setting up Benzema. Messi was involved in the equalizer, by running, you’ve guessed, at three or four white shirts and lacing an exquisite pass to Sanchez. The latter, was no bit part player, signed from Udinese, he scored a great first goal and equalizer for Barca, and was my man of the match, until the late Inestia show. Snow White only had seven dwarves. Sanchez boots are also filled with gold. Real Madrid with the other best player in the world and the self-styled super model Ronaldo, well, they should really have won. But that’s football. Really weren’t good enough and Ronaldo was rotten. It’s a beautiful game and none are more beautiful than Barca. Celtic, of course, are a work in progress, but will be better. Alas, not in my lifetime.
