Happiness is a warm keyboard=I live to and love to write

What is it about Owls? They fascinate with their mystery…They dart between trees nearly invisible in the darkening night…and if you chance to see one… you hold your breath not wanting the moment to end...for they are amazing to watch.

There is an owl that lives behind my house in a small wooded area…and late at night or actually just into sunset…he or she hoots its lone call into the night…and stops me in whatever I am doing…frozen with ear straining concentration…listening for the sound...and imagining the beautiful bird sitting high upon a sturdy tree limb...it makes me smile and feel grateful and special that I've heard his song ...

I am not a country girl by birth but even growing up in ‘Concrete City, New York’…I knew where to go to be surrounded by the luxury of nature...and I often found my way there.

Manhattan’s great high-rises and sky scraping architecture still made way for miles and miles of beautiful breathing space…like one called Central Park…and in the borough of Queens…there was Flushing Meadows Park, it once housed the 1964 and ’65 Worlds Fair and still had nature paths to walk….and in my hometown of Brooklyn it was The Botanical Gardens and Prospect Park that shared this nature lover’s title of 'Magnificent Spaces to Explore'…and Prospect Park had a wonderful vintage carousel and real horseback riding trails to entice me with too…

My best memories of growing up, seem to have always featured nature...oceans, trees, open spaces…Summer Beaches, Autumn Tree leave filled Parks and Winter Ice Skating Rinks....These were my playgrounds…and made every moment of my childhood through teenage years joyfully alive with motion and life long, happiness filled memories…

I know the world is changing with beyond Jetson-like technology...smart phones, video gaming and so many other tethering devices have captured attentions..and these new toys can change the amount of time we spend actually living in the reality of life around us.

At almost any time of day...anywhere…You'll see people walking along as they stare into screens of unnatural light…even as magnificent blue jays and cardinals fly by them…no flicker of interest moves their eyes from their digital world…I’m not even sure that if an owl landed on their heads they’d even notice it...or...maybe they'd take a selfie of it.

Of course, not all of us humans are this oblivious...some of us will stop and watch the beauty of a bird in flight ...or notice the colorful changes of fall leaves on the trees and...stop to listen for the hoots of an Owl in the night...

Tonight I'm quietly sitting...listening to the those faint hoots..and as I sip my tea…I imagine...he's darting through the trees...and having a fine night of flight...

Thanks for listeningsmiley

Hi Penny, you sound so much like me. I can understand exactly where you're coming from. It's so nice to know that there's even just one person that's on my wavelength.

I've never seen an owl in its natural habitat, only in bird sanctuarys. They are certainly one of my favorite birds. May you have many more hours of watching this amazing bird in flight, hope it inspires.

Jenny.

Hi Jenny,

Yes, it does inspire. All of nature can inspire us if we let it. I'm glad we agree. smiley

lots of owls in world war one trenches with the rats and mice as food. Other birds too, our corvine friends, but birdsong is a background noise to our lives if we just listen.

So true, nature's chorus is lovely and free. Didn't know about that WWI Owl fact. Thanks for that.
