When?

When am I going to get my Ukrainian lodger? I registered my interest on Homes for Ukraine some time ago. I have spent hours sorting out my spare room. In fact I shall be moving into my spare room and my lodger shall be getting my current bedroom. Both rooms have their pros and cons. My back bedroom has been my office since my younger daughter was awarded her degree and moved abroad to work and travel. It has more shelving. The front room, the new home of my lodger is a little bigger and has more privacy as there is a bolt inside the door and a flap which can be used to shut out my cat.

'Six of one and half a dozen of the other' you might say.. But I am not applying to accomodate half a dozen Ukrainians.

Only one, for 6 to 9 months in my spare room, in a standard terraced house with a courtyard garden. We are close to the shops, the rail station, the gym and the sea.

When?

Thaks for writing back TJ. I registered my interest on the Government website as I don't have any contacts in Ukraine. So far I have received one email from my local council which does not give any timeline indicating when anything may move forward.

banner headlines, lies, inertia and all the things we've come to expect from Boris Johnson's governemt. Warwashing. Using the invasion of another European counttry to generate positive spin. The saddest part, is it's largely worked. Poland has taken in almost 2 million refugees. Briton, supposedly the sixth richest nation in the world, less than 20 000. We are one of the few countries to demand extensive paperwork for the majority of those fleeing war. over 90% whom are women and children. Not my Prime minister. You're trying to do your bit. Good on yeh.

Thanks CM. I'm sure I will eventually get a women lodger for my spare room maybe one in my age range.A handsome man who is a year or so too old to fight at the front would also be good! Better still I might get a cat-friendly lodger that I can pay to look after Saffron when I go on one of my mini breaks. But when?

A friend of mine who is lucky enough to live in a big old house applied in March to take in a family. Her husband had some contacts through his work - he's an academic, as is the dad in the family - so they hoped that might help push things through. Ha. The visas were nowhere to be seen and even the baby had to be fingerprinted. In the end they badgered their MP, my friend rang the Home Office time after time (she wasn't complimentary about their competence) and finally she asked if anyone knew a journalist who would run the story. Suddenly, the visas came through and the Ukrainian family have now been able to make travel plans. I have no doubt that if my friend and her husband hadn't been the sort of people who have 'contacts', they'd still be waiting. I know of several similar cases. I hope you get sorted out soon. It's heartbreaking to think that people are suffering unnecessarily, because of our completely useless government.

I am glad the family is now further forward

Nothing happening with East Devon District Council which is Tory controlled. However I have now also registered my interest with Exeter City Diocese who are taking 50 families. I filled in a more specific form and was also invited to write a welcoming letter which I did, Here's hoping  things will now start moving.
