For those who don't visit UKAuthors.com (tut, tut)...

...some news about Voices From The Web, UKA's first anthology:

Ok, I've had an email from Bluechrome and this is what they say (I've omitted the hugs and kisses):

'I will hopefully have a PDF across to you within the next couple of days. We've followed the format pretty much as supplied, but have added a header on each page that includes the title and page number etc. Additionally, we've varied the font a little for the title of each author's section (their name and story/poem title) to try and separate things out a little.

Re extending the deadline. I can list the book on our site at the full price, but supply you with a separate link that means the book sells at the discounted rate - that way, people will need to come from the UKAuthors site to take advantage of the cheaper price. If we go this route, I'm quite happy for the discount to remain indefinitely - but it really will only work from your site, so you'll need to make it clear, as I don't really want to get into refunds. For people who haven't got credit cards, I'll set-up a PDF that people can download and print and send with a cheque etc.

Re the publication date. I'd aim for 6 weeks after the manuscript/cover have been agreed. We can actually get books a little quicker, but it is nice to send Press Releases/book information to the book shops a few weeks early to give their buyers a chance to get books in the shops, if they so choose.'

If you're interested, here are their requirements for manuscripts. For more info, you can visit Bluechrome Publishing:

'For poetry it's pretty much by invitation other than for our competition which Ronnie Goodyer is running at the moment. For fiction, we are looking for full length or novellas fiction, that is "unique" i.e. no Clancy/Archer/Grisham clones - but everything submitted is read. We prefer submissions to be in the form of a Word Attachment if possible (we'll take disks/CDs/Paper if that is the only option, but the turn-around is a lot slower).'

Natually there's even more info on UK Authors :-)

So now you know...

Well, thank a lot for your input, guys. As L said, vive la difference, and as UKA, ABC and Young UKA's membership is rising steadily, we must be doing something right, right?

I think you were right to consider changes Andrea. It isn't as if the 'unnavigable' comments came from the nasties on this site. They were from 'nice' people who could, in another guise, be any old wannabe writers surfing the web for a new writing site. I found the comments over on uka in response to your thread there very defensive considering no one had read this thread prior to saying their piece. I think you need to consider yourself and the ambitions you have for your site. If you are happy with the rate of growth and the size of current membership then keep it as it is (keeps the natives quiet too.) If you want the site to be accessible to all then maybe it should be easier for a newcomer to find their way around. ABC is probably the easiest site on the web for navigation. But look how huge it has become. Possibly too big and impersonal. You have already made changes, over the last year, to suit the hardcore members of UKA and if they and more importantly, you, are happy then keep the status quo. One thing I've noticed about ABC is that despite varied criticism since it's inception it has not changed. (Which has probably been to your benefit since all those here that wanted a comment facility have switched to UKA!) As you say, viva la difference. But do what 'you' want to do for the future of your site and not just what 10 out of 600 members want. I'd hate it to become a clone of abc. And yes Flash, I saw your comment about my gloop remark. You trying to get me in trub or what? I do find it gloopy. Doesn't mean it is ... just my opinion. Jelly baby anyone?

I thought you might find the prospect of being dealt with severely by Andrea and Pioden rather appealing. I'll have a Jelly baby, do you fancy a Scone lightly buttered.

I don't know St. Austell, but Slough's easy enough to navigate. Is UKauthors more like Tottenham, for instance? You think you're doing fine and you suddenly find yourself on that one way system AGAIN. If you can stay out of that trap, then it's simple enough.

THe shout box is a bit of fun, pure and simple, Gloop? if you want to call it that but remember its important not to take yourself too seriously. The site is easy to navigate provided you are capable of holding a map the right way up, I have never had any difficulty and I visit regularly. The only Crit I would have is that Andrea, wonderful person that she is, takes comments to heart and rushes off to to fix that which does not need fixing. As has been said elsewhere, the two sites are different, and long may they be so. ABC is a fine site too but I have to say I find it slower to get to the listings and sometimes IU think that ABC could learnb a thing or two from UKA in that respect. I like UKA for the fun and silliness just as much as thewriting, its a great releif from a stressed occupation. Just my 2 pennorth, don't jump down my throat.

no, it's not as bad as the totenham one-way system. In fact, uka isn't hard at all. I pop over there for a shufti now and then. But as a newbie I agree you can be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of info on the front page. once you get used to it though you learn to ignore a lot of it. the forum is dead easy to find and is the same as this one apart from the fact that threads go the top if active. read work by clicking on the latest entry rolling box thing or by genre or by typing an author's name into the search box. best to avoid the shoutbox tho'. full of gloop.

Liana, the point of the thread was in Andrea's first post. Thereafter it has been a teasing load of nonsense. Could you lend the extraneous dot of your ellipsis to spider? He always seems to be one short. Flash, well done. Consider me nailed. 11hrs 50 mins approxy.

Storms darling - common practise dictates in lit, that ellipses be three dots, you are quite correct... however, i (and many others) tend to use more when simply tailing off through, say, lack of interest............. bit like falling off a cliff.

T'is, I UKA's little helper. I agree that UKA's FP looks busy, it could do with less side blocks and a shorter FP message (Andrea!) However, The community is great and I promise you there is almost NO grief on the site. We've got lots'o gizmos like the shoutbox or chatroom and you can even create your own five page website for free (the script needs a tweak here and there tho') like all websites, I think we tend to stick with the ones we know and are comfortable with. ABC is a great site and very successful. but so is UKA ta! Richard

Oh, bloody hell! My 'bollox' was s'posed to be tongue-in-cheek. Am now feeling suitably chastised, although I dunno what you lot have against Griff - he's a very productive member and has never cause a seconds trouble. Someone (who shall remain nameless, but of whom I'm very fond) did once compare the front page of UKA to an overstuffed cottage. I LIKE overstuffed cottages, but I see your point. On the other hand, the differences between UKA and ABC are kinda nice - it gives people choices and it wouldn't do, or at least would be pretty boring, if the two...ahem...most popular writers' sites in Europe, were the same. Ok, ok, I'll go off and see what can be done with the front page... *grumble, whinge, moan*
