sl words

according to david crystal, most words beginning with the combination of the letters G and L are words that are associated with light... gleam, glitter, glisten, glare... and the majority of 'SL' words are apparently words with negative connotations... slag, slapper, sludge, slurry, slap, slop, sleazy, slacker, slay, slash, sly, slug.... etc etc... lets hear it for positive sl's i say... hox, here's one for you... slipper.

why does that happen then?

oh god, it's the weekend and im still obsessed with the english language... help me please.

gloomy means no light... i think we're neck and neck here.

If you're as sad as me then you really must be sad. But we're agreed that gloomy is a negative word all the time? What words are usually associated with being negative can be turned on their head to become positive in a sentence?

come on now you two! stick to the rules..no hang on.. make some rules then stick to them. We all know you can make anything sound positive but 'slap' is generally a negative word in this game as far as I can see (just because she's feeling good I'm sure her forhead would rather not have been slapped) what about sleigh? that has good vibes about it and it's festive too so ner! also I take the point about 'gloom' it is to do with light but is definately a negative word so it will have to sit in the 'ven diagram' mid section of this game.

I'll go for the positive G L's good, glamorous, grammatical and pinching Hox's line that's enough about me. Oh! oh must leave you as have just developed a rather aggravating cough that little white lie must be stuck in my throat...

Flashy & Liana, well in the sad stakes I bet I beat you both hands down (I'm sure Liana won't disagree). What about slake, slant, slope, slaphappy, slapstick, slap-up, sleek, sleep, slumber, slice (of cake...ummmmmm), slip (as in undergarment), slogan, slot, slat, sleuth? What a shitty, wet, windy weekend...God I'm bored! *goes back to fly-fishing with J.R.Hartley* [%sig%]

more negatives.. sloth, slur, slush, slurp (yuck) slime, slimy, slop, slouch, slovenly, slob Ely, you might be right with sleigh, but there is also slay which is a negative... there are definitely more negs than positives in the SL stakes. How useless is this info?

i've always thought of the word 'slut' in a generally positive manner.
Liana

hahahaha... so a 'terrible slut' would be one who is crap at being slutty, rather than a really really slutty person?

That's right. A really slutty person would be a 'common carrier,' a term originating in the transporation industry to describe railroads, frieght companies, and the like.

My nana calls women sluts if they are messy... I don't think she realises how rude it is or that it has any sexual connotations. Can be very embarrassing I assure you.

It seems to some of the middle and younger set just being a nan is embarrassing now adays can't wait to be looking down on them when its their turn as times don't change that much...

I still say by the set I mentioned and I did say most and not all!! nan's are just an embarrassment these days...
