Joss Stone

Joss Stone's "The Soul Sessions" must surely be one of the best albums I've bought in a year. Thoroughy listenable, if there is such a word. And if there isn't I've just made it up.

Mind you, Camden Town's Amy Winehouse has a cracking album out in "Frank". Despite her nasal tones, it's one of those albums you can put on - (although by rights you should take it out of the cover, place it on the turnstyle, wipe the dust off and gently lay the needle down at the beginning) - sling a leg over the armchair and listen to with a glass of Pinot Grigio.

Maybe I'm going through one of my female voice phases at the moment when it comes to music. I haven't played any of my Acoustic Alchemy, Four Play or Rippingtons albums for months.

I can see me playing Bebel Gilberto before the night is out. And by tomorrow I'll be listening to her mum.

Well, I said over a month ago that I think Amy Winehouse could be the next Billy Holliday, and guess what? Amongst a whole group of other stars she's singing at the Barbican tonight in a Billy Holliday tribute night. Now that's a concert I wouldn't have minded getting tickets for if I'd heard about it earlier.

I saw Joss Stone on Parkinson on Saturday murdering a classic........it might even have been one of her compositions......murdered it anyway. Maybe in ten years when her voice has matured she might hol down a tune.

Yeah, I just caught that too. She didn't look good either, did she? However, she's only sixteen, yet if you listen to her album she really does sound like a 30-year-old black American. Maybe Saturday was just a bad night.

Bought the Amy Winehouse CD the other day, I think she's completely for real and streets ahead of the other new female singers. I'm not convinced there'll ever be another Billie Holiday though.

I listened to this a while back. (I forgot who mentioned it, but someone recommended it.) And I did think it was pretty good. The singer is definitely talented and sounds confident. Soul is not really my music, though.

I think it was Ralph who recommended it... I have heard a few of hers now - clearly she's talented, but like Don, soul isnt really my thing either...

She's got a great voice, but I can't help thinking it sounds *fake* - since she sounds like a mature black American woman and is really a teenage white girl who speaks very nicely. She's obviously imitating her favourite singers and is therefore not genuine. Go and buy the real thing - get an Aretha CD today.

I've just got a Roberta Flack Cd and I'd say she has just about the smoothest soul voice of all time but, I do like the new pretenders and the amount of talent coming our way at the moment is fantastic. There's Joss (superb) Amy (again, excellent) then there's your Jamie Cullum (a bit more Jamie olliver in his antics but very talented), your thingy boubliet (can't even be spellt closely enough to find on Google). A lot of new talent and all very good on the ear to one degree or another.

Sorry, have to disagree and say that I put Joss Stone and Jamie Callum in the category usually reserved for five year old beauty queens: unnatural and nauseating. I am quite surprised to find I like Katie Melua though, she's got a bit of the Cerys Matthews about her. And Roberta Flack rocks.

I am in total agreement with Jeff Prince on Amy Winehouse. To me she's fake in the manner of Jane Horocks in 'Little Voice'. She has got a great voice but it's a shame she's using it in this way. I like a little authenticity in music and Diana Krall is top of my ratings at the mo. I like Eva Cassidy's voice too.

I've just bought the Amy Winehouse album. I think it's great. It sounds like Lauren Hill impersonating Marilyn Monroe. I'm sure how she's inauthentic. Her lyrics are fantastic, not in poetic way but in that they create a believable character, in fact, a character I probably went to college with.

That should be "I'm not sure how she's inauthentic"

Anybody got any opinion on Diana Krall? I heard her do the most amazing rendition of 'Fly Me to the Moon' recently. She accompanies herself, which I always find amazing, and she makes her voice do things that an absent band might otherwise provide. I liked it a lot.

Diana Krall's album "The Look of Love" is excellent and includes, of course, the fabulous "S'Wonderful." Norah Jones is another great listen also, although I've only got one album - "Come Away With Me."

Joss Stone is like so three months ago. She is very, very good though as I reported when I saw her perform live. The new one to watch also is a lass named Amy Whithouse. Enjoy! Ralph

Apologies for being like so three months behind the times. I'll certainly watch out for Amy Whithouse, though. I'm currently enjoying listening to Amy Winehouse (who coincidentally has a very similar-sounding name), as I mentioned when opening this thread.

So you did Karl, my apologies. We have some top singers at the moment. Cheers Ralph

I'm really getting into Chesney Hawkes at present. He's got a great voice.

Joss Stone sounds great but I can only judge her by her covers - don't know if she can write her own material. Amy Winehouse is my favourite of the current crop - what a powerful voice and lots of attitude. I can't believe she's only 20. Katie Melua seems a bit bland, Norah Jones is lovely but only time will tell whether these girls really have what it takes or if they're just the latest batch of corporate muzak. [%sig%]

I've a good feeling about Amy Winehouse. I suspect she could be a modern day Billy Holliday, and may well be with us for 30/40 more years to come. I can picture her when she's about 45, in a tearfully evocative stage of drunkeness, skirt split to within a couple of inches of her crotch, voice huskier and less nasal through decades of smoke filled low-life bars, yet still able to knock us dead as her lyrics become even more veracious.
