selling your self

Hello all.
I recently joined, (in a moments madness) an online dating agency. Now I am being inundated with responces from peoplle who all seem to do and say exactly the same thing. "likes walks on cold winters days, cuddling up by warm fire, theatre,(the arts should be doing VERY well if half these guys are telling the truth.) reading and going to the movies." I know it is difficult to sell your self in type, I had an awful time writing my profile and in the end just went for humour. But really most of them are so awful!

So can you lot, literate and eloquent, do any better? What would you say on a dating site to convince the world in a few lines that you are worth a date?
I promise I won't hold you to it, no one will have to date me, (except you Rachel as I'm seeing you tonight.)
Natalie

I'd hate a same sex relationship. We'd have the sex and then realise no one had bought any cake.

Sorry to get to this thread so late. Sirren, 48 responses is no big deal. With the internet, you could wind up with hundreds, perhaps thousands. It's too easy to copy and paste a boiler plate response into an email and hope for the best. Now in the old days before the internet, when people actually had to write a letter and mail it, they would take a bit more care. I used to get about 100 responses every time I put an ad in the weekly New York Magazine. By far the best time was the first issue in January. Everyone who was dumped over the holidays and spent New Year's Eve alone was desperate to answer ads. The bad news is that by the time I got their letters, called, and met them for a drink, they were already thinking about getting back together with the previous boyfriend, and meeting me was typically the final straw that drove them back. Oh well. Of course, you could always try the Fast Date circuit and meet 25 people for 3 minutes in one evening. Or maybe not. Anyway, it's an adventure, and fun in its own way, provided you don't take it seriously.

The best comment ever said to be by a man was 'I want equality in a relationship but any women who has a relationship with me has to understand I'm in charge' I'm still trying to figure out what he was trying to convey ...

My gal and I constantly alternate who's in charge. Seems to work. "Your day to lead."

no need to shave your legs Rach, it's only a date and I'm just not that kind of girl!! (shh don't despute that, they don't know me round these parts.) Nat Besides I guess the presence of all the others kind of knocks my dateness on the head. Never mind back to the online men shopping. n

I'm calling the whole thing off and going back to random pick up's followed by hasty sex and a morning of regret. But first of all I still have 8 days left on my membership so I'm thinking about putting this up. "Single, fussy, shallow as a puddle, looking for gorgeous men to ogle online during bored hours at work. Anyone wanting a generous, sensitive woman will be sadly ignored and I really don't need to hear that you are fun with GSOH as I am only after your body."

Actually I am expecting a knight in shining armour to come galloping past at any moment and rescue me from penury and artistic obscurity. Failing that...What's your profile?

I thought it just about covered all the major topics I'm interested in. Forgot reading which I would probably swap for sleeping if push came to shove. My picture on here is of a shark, so I depends if prospective ad answerers are into gills or not. Have you met any of the answerers yet? Never done the dating agency thing though have gone on few blind dates with a few blokes. They never (and she means never) work. Well not for me.

No date yet but I only joined on monday. The one guy who looked cute and my type hasn't writen to me yet, but about 38 (and rising) have. There has to be at least one statistiaclly who's not a dud as far as I'm concerned. Some of these guys are gorgeous too, which makes me feel less like a saddo. I know what you mean about blind dates, (although I have had one which was ok.) The last one I went on the guy was waiting for a heart and lung transplant though. Not promising really! Certainly not a good candidate for getting jiggy.

It's not a saddo thing to do anymore anyway - loads of people do it. If you get loads of answers (like you have done) the probability is v high that there's someone you'll fancy lots (think of being in a room with 38 men.... ooh... when you think of it like that...!) I think I'm terrible at blind dates not because they're not fanciable but because all of the relationships/flings I've had really rely on my sense of humour which usually gets someone fancying me. If I just turn up and they nothing about me I feel like I have to work too hard. If that makes sense.

I know exactly what you mean!! Even online my philosophy tends to be to take the micky and make it funny. And only answer people who make me laugh. Everyone else on here must be very happlily married as they can't even imagine filling in the form. come on you lot sell your selves!

Nobody is ever truthful on CVs or Dating agency forms. I have never indulged in the later but my CV usually opens with "A pro-active science graduate with over five years in commercial publishing, I am seeking a role that will utilise my existing technical skills and cmmercial awareness and expand them in a challenging role." Whereas I should put "Lazy, disorganised, eccentric dosser seeks job way below her capacities so she can come in late and spend much of the day surfing the web, chatting online and writing poetry. Must have no office dress code."

Internet dating is very popular over here. I've done it a number of times. My current fling of 4+ months is a result of this. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Loose any stigma you may have about it, because it can be really fun and fast paced. From a man's perspective, here's some insight girls.... I never approach a new acquaintance with any expectations. Keep it simple on the first meeting, a cup of coffee (tea for you folks maybe). If you get the slightest hint of something wrong, it's probably because there is something wrong. This may sound arrogant, but I look for a reason not to see this person again. If I find one, I move on. No sense wasting time on somebody that's going to be a problem relationship. As a man, I alway's pay for the first date, but if things go beyond the first date, I feel it's important that I not be a meal ticket. If you spark on the first date, take a few days off before you try again. The second date is the make-or-break point for me. I've usually found out enough about somebody by the end of the second meeting to know for certain that I want to run for my life or keep on plodding. Watch for guys/gals that start talking sex at this point. If that's all you're looking for, you may as well hop in now, cause it's going to burn out quick if you're not getting your jollies. Watch for mystery people. If they seem too reluctant to let you into their most basic functions, they may be hiding the fact that they are married or living with somebody else and just looking for fun. I met one gal that was married, living with a boyfriend and dating on the side. Everything was a mystery, alway's excuses for not being able to do this or that in the most simple of tasks. The door didn't get near my ass on the way out.

Thanks I'll bear that in mind. It looks like fun, a bit scary though. I am finding it really hard not to answer everyone and be nice to them. I feel awful that I have to choose anyone and hate the thought that someone might be upset or feel bad because I didn't reply. God I sound like I love myself!! Having said that I understand when people don't reply to me, so I guess I'll have to credit everyone else with the same intelligence.

My favourite is my friend Claire, who sent one in saying "Please send photo...of your car" Wish people would be honest and list 'Watching How Ming is Your House and going into town to look round the shops but not actually buying anything' as their hobbies and interests. I don't see hordes of people walking round the woods in their spare time. This is quite hard, you don't want to sound boastful, or too wacky. Wacky just spells BlindDate contestant on Chair Two who won't get picked. For me, maybe "Unusual but not dangerous man of fashion and pleasure seeks woman who is either very very nice or very very horrid. Please don't say which, the mystery is the best part"

Actually, what I've found, in Denver at least, is that there are a lot of lonely people just looking for somebody. Most folks in my age range (40-50's) are on their 2nd or 3rd attempts at relational bliss and we all have a horror story from our past. I've ignored my urge to write about these experiences, somehow I feel it's too scurrilous to us others hopes and dreams for personal fodder.

I'm not treading on anyone.. nor am I writing about it, I just think that people don't think hard enough about what they write on these things. When you get 30 emails all saying the same thing what do they expect to get in return? If they don't attempt to make me take notice or make me laugh at this stage then there isn't much hope that they will later on. Although I wish them all luck, obviously I'm not so reat at this game or I wouldn't be on the site in the first place! As for spelling if that was aimed at me sorry I always spell check but I'm dyslexic so I can't see if I miss something.

You are not a terry pratchett / stephen king fan. You do not wear burberry, you know the difference between could have and could of, and you post a photo of yourself rather than your car. I don't need to see your chest (yet) and if you send me a photo of yourself on a beach in Crete, make sure it was at the very least taken in this decade, and you are not riding a banana boat.

the trouble is that dating sites ARE full of weirdo saddo losers with no friends ... it's no good saying to your mate ... "well *i* am on it so they can't ALL be saddo loser freaks" ... they ARE ... it's far better to hang round other "common interest" sites like this one and hope you pull by sheer force of personality ... at least then you will find someone who (although they are a sad freaky weirdo loser with no friends) will at least share your interest in writing ...

I don't know I was just about to fall in love with Tony, until someone mentioned snoring. I do meet people lots of other ways, but I had a moment’s madness and thought this way might be easier. I am regretting it now; I’m not getting any work done for being sent emails by lonely men wanting to chat. It is interfering with my chat room time here. Liana, I've seen your picture, I can't believe you would be single.

well there sirren is obviously your major mistake ... you cannot judge a person by looks alone now can you??? ... how do you expect to thrive in the mating game with THAT attitude? also, if someone made and marketed 'The Mating Game' what would the rules be? would it come in a presentation box set? How many players?
