Free books online!

http://www.gutenberg.org/

If it's out of copyright, chances are that you'll be able to find it here. A wonder of the internet, old books, online, for you to grab, for nowt.

Can anyone recommend me anything that I really should get from here?

Cheers,

This is great, I glanced through the top 100 authors and am left feeling slightly giddy with excitement. I would recomend H, Rider Haggard HG Wellls MR James James Fennimore Cooper but it would be more fun just to pick stuff you've never heard of that looks interesting like "Journals of Two Expeditions into the Interior of New South Wales by John Oxley" (I've stopped for gas at the James Fennimore Cooper service station you know.)

MR James is one of my all time favourites. "Oh Whistle and I'll Come to you My Lad", "Canon Alberic's Scrapbook", "The Mezzotint" etc are some of the best ghost stories in the English language EVER. Well's is another firm favourite, at least the stuff that's up on Gutenberg. There's a delicious reference to the short story "The Crystal Egg" in the first 10 pages of Alan Moore's "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" book 2 that still thrills me to bits. "War of the Worlds", "Dr Moreau", "The Time Machine", "The Invisible Man", mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Any more suggestions? Cheers, Mark Brown, Editor (on leave), www.ABCtales.com
