Publication & promotion of Larry & Mick

'Tales of Larry and Mick' is nearly ready for publication via lulu.com! As I'm new to all this, however, I'm wracking my brain to try and find the best means of marketing the finished product (apart, of course, from promoting it here on ABC). Can anyone recommend any good places (websites or whatever) to self-promote my work or any other workable means to do so?

Of the cuff, I've thought of contacting local media, that sort of thing - don't suppose anyone has any contacts in such in the West Midlands?

Thanks all!

maybe try contacting your local radio and paper - they might run a piece on a local up and coming author. good luck and tell me when the copies are ready - i think i would like to read it all in a proper book - from the snippets i've read it should be entertaining. Juliet

Local papers are generally fairly easy to find (in the newsagent) and they're usually pretty desperate for anything to write about. If you send them a plausible sounding press release, they're fairly likely to copy and paste a chunk of it into their news pages. BBC local radio is usually equally desperate for content of any sort. Local bookshops will usually take two or three copies of your book on a sale or return basis and, if they really like the sound of your book, might ask you to do a reading. Either way, doing readings where you can sell copies is essential. The only way to sell significant numbers (more than 50 or so) of a self-published fiction book is through direct sales.

First thing you do is offer to do a reading at your local bookshop and sign copies... You have to be cheeky to get anywhere these days. But you have to offer something first. It's also fairly well known if you hold a launch - that's when you will sell the most copies of a self-published book. It doesn't have to be a big deal... it can be simple tea and coffee with bikkies or wine and cheese donated by the local winecellers. Your local writer's or other community group will probably help you out with a venue and advice and they bring a ready audience with them too. Or else go to your local pub and ask for the back room on a night when the publican needs to get punters in. Offer to do a reading and invite everyone you can think of and all their friends to listen while they down a pint or two (which they pay for and the publican will be happy about) and perhaps buy a book. Buy a couple of packets of frozen sausagerolls and serve them with sauce... Do a post-office mail box drop and don't forget your neighbours. It's suprising who'll come out of the woodwork. Best of luck! Frances. Check out my website: http://www.francesmacaulayforde.com
I'd suggest using a psuedonym, something like 'pepsoid', par example, just in case anyone recognises you. Unless, of course, you have no humility; no self-awareness; no negative thoughts like "hey, maybe I'm a shite writer?" Good luck anyway, doo lally, oops, meant to say, Lulu I'm sure you will sell tens of units. ************************************FIN****************************************
Thank you, dearest Snitcher, for your words of encouragement. And, less sarcastically... thank you to everyone else! :-) * P * :-) ( Read my blog! - www.oddcourgette.blogspot.com )
