Teenagers and me...

As most of you probably know, AJ, alas, had to leave as editor of Young UKAuthors. Since she *has* left, however, we decided to give the site a total re-vamp, the idea being to aim it towards teenage writers rather than the under 11s.

Now as you also probably know, my teenage years are...well...a thing of the past, but I'm doing my feeble best. I've changed the theme to a sort of gloom and blood (red and black, to you and me), bunged on some Manga (VERY 'in', apparently), added weblink categories such as 'Music' and 'Young people's Health Issues', added hundreds of resources for young writers and scattered a few 'hot''s and 'cool''s around.

I'd be awfully grateful, however, if those of you slightly less geriatric than me, could take a look and a)tell me what you think and b)come up with anything, anything at all, that you think'd appeal to teen writers. I'm not talking about the techie bits, which still need quite a lot of teaking, or the domain name, which will be changed anyway, but the content.

All help and/or advice MOST appreciated.

Ta.

Oh, almost forgot the URL, silly me:

You could add a fun multiple choice quiz, to see if they really are teenagers eg:- 1) Trainers should be acidic enough to render other house dwellers A) Senseless B) Silent C) Praying for good weather so they can camp outside 2) Tooth brushes are for A) Keeping in their packets to add maximum value B) Wetting at the optimum time C) Swapping for your parents, after you've removed the dirt from the base of your trainers 3) Jeans, hoody's, and rude or offensive t-shirts should be able to accommodate which of the following A) Four average sized infant school children B) Your mate when he's grounded C) Dismembered bits of your moralistic parents for later disposal 4) Please give the meaning for the following phrases A)Uhhhhhhhgggggggggggggggg B)Uaaaaaaarrrrrrrrhhhhkkkkk C)Larrrrrrrrterrrrrrrrrr 5) Please choose the most suitable end to this sentence Aftershave should be smelt from- A) Ten feet B) Half a mile C) From out side the car I'm sitting in for at least a twenty mile radius 6) Accepting morals are A) A new group B) Something rude C) As painful as having the plug cut off my PS2

Hi Andrea - I'm a teenager and I liked the site - it definately looks like it's just for teens and the colouring is cool. The only thing I can think of to change about it is to make it more spaced out and maybe make the font sizes for the titles a bit bigger, because for some reason that stuff was bugging me when I looked at it. But apart from that, it's great! Good job :) I'm off to go check it out a bit more . . .

Thanks for that, Caz. Er...whaddya mean, precisely, by spaced out? As in mushrooms, or more space on front page? Font sizes bigger, eh? You mean in the 'Look For' box? Or the text in general? Or the titles of the submitted pieces (although they're quite large already)? Ta for your input - am most grateful :-)

Hi again Andrea! I just went and created an account on the site, it's so cool how you get your own page and everything! And you can change the background and stuff, very groovy. I meant spaced out like having more space, not like 'shrooms, although that is a neat idea! The text size thing I meant for the titles of all the little sections and things, but actually now that I've been on the site more the size doesn't bother me, I think it must just be something you get used to. Sorry for not being more specific! If you wanna be really cool by the way, you could use the alternate spelling of 'cool' which is 'kewl' in the text. It's very up to date!

Oooh, bloody hell! Goin' a bit far, that :-) Glad you approve, though - I'll...er...make more space - what d'you think could go? 'Also published'?

Not "Kewell", though, unless you want to upset everyone who's not from Leeds. d.beswetherick.

Looks great to me, Andrea, but then again my teenage years a distant memory too ;o) I'm sure that YUK will thrive - as it deserves to - but CUK or TUK might be a more appealing short form ;O) If you can think of a way of extending it to TUCK – (Teeage Uk Childen's .. ermmmm.. yes, well... that explains it then... Answers on a postcard to..... Young UKAuthors etc.

Yes, the manga's a great idea! Personally, as a teenager I didn't like anything that seemed to be consciously 'aimed' at me - I think that's an annoyance I've always had and still have with the idea that I can be lumped into a marketable category. But then, I was an ultra-wary adolescent, and I don't think you overdo the 'young' theme at all.

Thanks guys, that's MOST encouraging. And it's no longer YUK, Mykle, just plain ol' Young UKAuthors. Domain name's now been changed too. I'm not particularly trying to 'aim' at teenagers, more give 'em their own space away from the main site and all us boring oldies wot enjoy, shock, horror, GARDENING and can't stand Eminem (actually, I think he's brill :-)) Ta again...er...anymore?
