Escalator Literature 2006 is open to any writer in the region who has not received a
Grant for the Arts award from Arts Council England within the past ten years. The
entrants may be published or be new or highly promising unpublished writers. The
final ten writers will be selected by a panel of literary mentors chaired by the
award winning author and academic Michelle Spring who lives in Cambridge. She said "It is a fantastic opportunity for writers in the Eastern Region to kick start their
careers"

The New Writing Partnership was set up in 2004 and aims to highlight and support
creative writing, establishing the East of England as a national and international
centre to excellence. It is a unique literary collaboration between the University
of East Anglia, Arts Council England, East, Norwich City Council and Norfolk County
Council. Norwich has an international reputation in the field of creative writing
based on the MA in Creative Writing at the UEA which was set up by Malcom Bradbury and Angus Wilson in the 1970's. Previous students include the Booker Prize Winner Ian Mcewan, Tracey Chevalier author of Girl with a Pearl Earring and Kazuo Ishiguro author of Remains of the Day. Famous faculty members have included The Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, Rose Tremain and Angela Carter. The New Writing Partnership aims to build on the literary heritage and strength of Norwich, Norfolk and the East of England to establish the region as a centre of excellence for a new generation of writers and readers.

Escalator Literature is part of Escalator, a pioneering initiative from Arts Council
England, East aimed at finding, supporting and investing in the best artistic
talent across the East of England. Through the development of partnerships and
projects, individuals, groups and organisations across the artistic fields of
performing arts, visual arts, music and literature are helped to flourish at a
regional, national and international level.

Escalator and Escalator International open up professional development opportunities
for artists and art organisations in the region. It also attracts national and
international artists to the East of England to help foster a rich and creative

Can I just say it is well worth applying for this - I was one of the Escalator writers last/this year and it is really brilliant, and has helped me enormously.
