First Gigs..
Dear All
We may have done this one before but it's good to bring it back.
What was the first gig you went to and what do you remember about it?
Mine was when I was fourteen and I went to see the haggard Marvin Gaye play at the Albert Hall. He was riddled with cocaine at the time ((I read that much later) but still made me tingle when he sang 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' (it was the only song of his I knew of his at the time).
The strongest memory though was that I was working as the 'Saturday Boy' at a shoe shop at the time (Lilley and Skinner in Basildon) and I was taken by the manager (Paul) as a reward for selling the most suede cleaning spray over the previous month. On the long journey home on the (then) single compartmented train back to Essex he tried to have his wicked way with me. I wont go into details but his weasel nose never looked the same again.
Stranger than that is that we both continued to work in the same shoe shop for a further three years and we still keep in touch from time to time.
Marvin Gaye went on to die at the hands of his Father and is still one of my all time musical heroes; I have everything that he has ever recorded.
Now, what about you?
Ralph
