A tale of two kingdoms by ian hobson
Writing well for children is not easy, but ian hobson manages beautifully here - in a story that combines morality, chess and ingenuity. I think the grown-ups will like it too:

Thanks, Mr tcook, though your comments surprised me, as I hadn’t written the story specifically for children. Call me old fashioned but, because of the blood and guts, and the B-word, I gave it a 12 certificate.

Fair enough - but it's got all the essential elements of a children's story. Mind you many of Angela Carter's finest have similiar elements and they certainly aren't for children. I'm sure that everyone will enjoy this one though!
