Truly original
The book is called Moscow Stations and it's by a Russian writer called Venedikt Yerofeev. It's a transaltion, but my God, does it get to your soul. It's an allegorical journey through this man's life and it's one of those books that makes you cry, laugh out loud or throw up at its various propositions. The author is at the arsehole end of life in a very cold and unforgiving world which he juxtaposes with famous writings and scientific theories. The best of the latter is that no scientist has ever come up with a mathematical formual for the interval between hiccups! Given that he drinks anything and everything at his disposal on his journey - even sock deodorant which is an ingredient of one of his cocktails - it's a remarkable tale of survival.
If anyone else has read it please let me know! It's the most original book I've read for ages.
