I'm devestated! I've lost it again!

Jesse's Internet connection, that is :-)

I've had to resort to sending a desperate email to Vicomsoft. They said they'd get back to me in one business day. I might have died of drink by then.

Anyway, thought I'd let you see the email I sent in the vain hope that one of you lot might ber able to help :-(

Here it is, then:

I'm trying, in vain, to establish a connection between a windows XP machine (host) and a windows ME OS (client) machine. The two machines are connected (we can share files and docs) by 2 ethernet network cards and a crosslink cable, all correctly installed. The XP machine is the one connected to the internet (obviously, as the host) via an ADSL USB modem.

The odd thing is, I managed a connection before, but now, after it ran perfectly for a week, seem to have lost it although I changed nothing. The file sharing still works, though, AS LONG AS I have the IP address (192.160.0.1 and subnetmasker 255.255.255.0) configured on the LAN connection for the client pc (LAN 3).

When the connection worked, the client pc (running Win ME) had the residential gateway device icon on the taskbar and in 'My Network Locations' (sorry, that's a trnaslation from the Dutch - which makes things doubly difficult :-)) but, of course, these disappeared when the connection was lost and there's no way I seem able to get it (the RGD) back.

Here's the setup on the XP host pc in Network Connections:

Client (Win ME, LAN connection 3)has an Intel 21041-Based PCI Ethernet Adapter (Generic) installed (on the XP host machine), and shows the following components: TCP/IP, print and file sharing and MS Network client, all boxes checked. TCP/IP properties has IP 192.168.0.1 and subnetmasker 255.255.255.0, no DNS, no standard gateway. If I change this to 'automatic IP/DNS', client can no longer share files. Obviously ICS is off on this (client)LAN.

Host (XP, LAN 4) is connected to the net through a USB ADSL LAN Adapter and the following components: TCP/IP, MS Network Client and file/printer sharing are installed, all boxes checked. IP address and DNS both automatic, ICS is enabled and firewall is disabled.

This is the setup on the ME client machine in Network Connections:

SMCE2 Card 10/100 (SMC 1211 TX) installed (and working), TCP/IP, files/printer sharing, MS Network Client all installed and boxes checked. IP properties: automatic, no gateway, all others fields are blank, WINS disabled and DNS disabled.

I've tried absolutely every combination there is (and ran the wizards on both machines countless times and rebooted both machines after every attempt), but either lose the file sharing possibility, or my own Internet connection (on the XP machine) and I can't get the client to see the RGD at all anymore. Can you help? It's driving me to drink...

See, told ya it'd be...er...riveting :-)

Oooh... Andrea. I just love it when a girl talks technical. Sorry can't help. Can only suggest the cabling (if it once worked)... but you must have checked that a 100 times.

Ah well, it was worth a try :-( No, cabling's fine, Leg, alas. I wish it were that simple. And George, you disappoint me. I thought with all those hundreds of pc's and zillions of gb's, you might be able to help... Pass the Twix, Jay, will ya?
