They call him Rufus
It was me and Ruth's one year anniversary yesterday, for a treat I managed to wangle a couple of tickets for Rufus Wainwright's album launch show in Islington.
He was beautiful, sang like an angel and played his piano and guitar like a dervish.
Highlight of the show was his sublime rendition of Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah'. Has most of the audience in tears.
We got very drunk and swooned all the way home on the tube.
I thought of Liana, she would have loved it.

you are right dan, and so is ralph... buckley's is much better than cohen's version as it has a purity and simplicity that old misery guts could never have achieved ... how did rufus' version sound?

I like Buckley's version and Cohen's version but I think they're very different. The Cohen version is dry and funny, Buckely's is passionate so it depends on what mood I'm in, really.
Kathryn Williams also does a really good live version, which is quite different to both of them.
Worst ever rendition of Hallelujah was by American evangelical Christian pop star at a religious music festival. It's fair to say that, while the song might have quite a few different points, this guy succeeded in missing all of them.

I think, technically, it's Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah'.

Of course it is, but Buckley made it his own. Rufus version was all about that.
