Spack on Channel 4
One of the advantages of being ill is that you can watch a heap of daytime television. At three minutes to ten this morning Channel 4 broadcast one of their '3 minute wonder' slots. It featured a poem by our very own Joe Dunthorne (spack) called 'the Lovers' Tree' about a an ancient beech tree in Inverness under which lovers over the years had met.
A lovely poem, slightly soppy camera work but a real treat. I can't find it on the Channel 4 site so maybe it isn't available anywhere on the web - maybe Joe can tell us differently!
Hey Tony,
How strange. That 3 Minute Wonder was first shown just over a year ago - I had no idea it was being repeated. Am very chuffed that it's on again and that you saw it though. Hurray for ManFlu!
I wrote that poem for the director who was doing a series of three three minute wonders about various important trees around Britain. My tree was famous for shading adulterous lovers as they got down and dirty. I only saw the tree in photographs though. Bah.
As far as I'm aware it's not available online although - having just googled it - I see that you can now buy a copy of all three programmes from Fulcrum TV. Yeah! I've got a copy of the films on DVD that, if anyone's really interested, I'd be happy to lend out.
In other, even more exciting self-promotion news, my novel (the first chapter of which was posted on ABC about two and half years ago) is currently being sent to publishers by my agent. I probably should wait until I hear whether anyone wants to publish it before getting too excited but - meh - I can't hold it in any longer. I'm so worried and sleepless. And also very excited. Hopefully, I'll find out some news, good or bad, within the next few weeks. Cross fingers and toes and swords.
Cheers Tone,
Joe x
I thought Joey D's poem sounded awesome when they performed it on TV. The guy reading really did it justice. Super-impressive.
They must have liked it or they wouldn't have repeated it. I thought the reading was a tad soft - but beggars can't be choosers.
Good luck with the novel - I'll buy it!
Hi Emma,
It's about a boy growing up in Swansea. He's obsessed with language. It's about him imagining (he has a very potent imagination) that his mother is having an affair with a family friend. He starts to semi-stalk the family friend. Hilarity ensues.
Better read than explained I think. Here's a link to the original story I posted on ABC:

And here's the second story I posted:

Both of these bits have been reworked and included in the novel.
Cheers,
Joe
Joe,
Just read the first link. That is really funny, and unusually written. I'd certainly buy it when it gets on the shelves.
