Everytime they sell off a public service, like the Royal Mail, they take a piece of my heart.

I'd rather sell off the Royal Family's assets ; they don't mean anything to me but the Royal Mail is a great British institution that I feel proud of; it's as British as tea and fish and chips and Dr Who and I feel that its a heinous and deeply unpatriotic act that the Tories are perpetrating in selling it off.

Hear, hear. A postage stamp after my own heart. Breaks me when institutions ( and people - with lives) are stamped out.

The old societal order - the long established 'Haves' right up to and including the 'Royal' family don't give a toss for collective institutions like the 'Royal Mail' or any other national business model. When I hear Michael Fallon who incidentally, was against the sell-off just four years ago, saying how "it is time to give the hard working foot sloggers who deliver our morning mail a share and a stake in the company for which they work" I just have to smile. What he really means is this: "It's time that the Tory party ethos of privatisation - returning public asset into private good - continued to roll out. The ingrates that stuff corporate junk mail through letter boxes will receive what doesn't even amount to crumbs from the process but the people that matter (our type of people) will reap huge reward." Unfortunately I can hear the flock already bleating.

I too care about people and lives, Vera but I just feel that the Tories are destroying British Culture and identity. Let's keep the nationalized public services and the working class and get rid of Eton and Royal Ascot and the Upper Class instead.
More privatisation! The railways, power companies etc have worked so well after privatisation havent they! Not. More money for the bankers and their ilk. It's the ROYAL Mail ffs! And how can it be ok to give shares to employees only? We ALL own this very British institution and each one of us deserves a stake in it - but of course all the shares will end up in the pockets of Cameron and Cleggs' mates, they are the only ones who can afford anything any more. The MP's need to pay for their 11% pay rise somehow...

Massive price hikes, foreign-owned companies that don't pay tax on the excessive profits, bosses that make tens of millions in share options and bonuses every year, we've been here before. The only difference is that this time it's the Lib Dems driving the mass giveaway of public assets. It's easy to forget how essential the mail service still is to British businesses. This is going to make a few people very rich whilst proving another blow to struggling small firms. Businesses need competitive electricity, gas, water and post charges, affordable transport so that they can recruit staff at a reasonable price, this brand of thatcherism is anti-business, anti anyone other the massive fat-cats who will simply asset-strip the sale and exploit the monopoly position.

Wait until they privatise education. It's well on its way.
