Madasafish!

I've just got on broadband¦ very exciting! I can't get over the fact that both me and my girlfriend can go on the internet, and we can make phone calls, all at the same time¦ (simple things'n'all that).

I do, however, have a bit of a techy question for the ABCtales Techy Contingent¦ I've changed the details of mine and my girlfriend's email accounts, on Outlook Express, so that they now connect to "Local Area Network ' which is working fine for receiving emails. But there seems to be a problem sending them ' it "searches for host and after a little while it gives up and I get this message saying something about a "socket error and a load of other gumpf. Is there something really simple and obvious I'm missing?

I have the same problem. It's because your email provider and your broadband provider are different. You'll have to use your on-line account to send, and download your sent emails as and when. Lisa
Correct, lisa. Although you can use your webmail host to send emails - but you need to know the pop number and code in order to do so. Just how you get that is unknown to me but I'm sure maddan or one of our more technically minded members will be able to help.
Thanks, Lisa + TC! That's exactly what we're finding we're having to do... Glad we're not just being stupid then! We are, however, getting so much spam nowadays on our old .fsnet account, I think it might be time to move on to a new, purely web-based one... We get free email addresses with Madasafish, but can anyone recommend anything else? (other than Hotmail, which, by the evidence of some of our friends, seems to be going through all sorts of probs at the mo!) ~PEPS~ You can’t finish a man till he’s finished his Texan Bar

That's mad! I've just recently signed-up with them too. If you have any access probs within the first 10 days don't worry about it because bt are doing line tests. Dont bother ringing them like I did, just leave it a couple of hours before trying again. I've found them to be great so far. Except, the voyager is a bit crap - crashes about once a week. But it's free so, whatever. I've just reached day 29 of my 5gb and I'm on 4.39. Not bad. I must wanr you though - the cust serv are helpful - that is when you've managed to overcome the language barriers - if you know whatta mean There's nothing more mind-teasing than the incomprehensible eagerly avowed - Dennett

Thank you, my friend! I might've know you and I were both Madasafish... ;-) Now I'm going to sound like a right luddite here, but when you say the Voyager "crashes," what exactly do you mean? I mean, what exactly happens and what do you have to do about it? Just so I'm prepared! Know exactly what you mean about cust serv... Not dealt with Mad yet, in that respect, but have similar issues with my mobile jobbie, "3"... Very helpful (as much as they can be), but... y'know... language issues... Well, when you get your voyager router you'll have to connect at voyager.home. As soon as you've done this you're connected 24/7. But, sometimes you'll open explorer and get a dead page. What you have to do then is press a little reset button at the back of the voyager, wait until it powers-up ,and then re-enter your connection info at voyager.home. It's no big deal. When I consider the amazing improvement in speed and service compared to NTHELL...then we're on to a good thing. I think I'm currently at 6.5mbps...which is optimal for my area. If you're in the sunny south you should easily manage 8mb There's nothing more mind-teasing than the incomprehensible eagerly avowed - Dennett

I think my Voyager just crashed. Neither the Mac nor the PC connected, and I fixed it by switching the thing off & on, then rebooting the PC... I can see this Reset button you speak of, Yan, but it seems to be just a little hole, which appears to have no effect if I stick something in it... Any thoughts? ~PEPS~ You can’t finish a man till he’s finished his Texan Bar

I've just recently switched ISPs from Tiscali to TalkTalk (£21 a month for land line, broadband and free calls) but it is proving a problem. I have to get my Migratory Access Code (MAC code) from Tiscali before TalkTalk can transfer me to their broadband. Tiscali tell me that they have to shut me down for 2 weeks before it can be transferred. So no computer for 2 weeks IF all goes to plan. Are Tiscali just fannying around or is there some wizard techy way around this problem?

If you stick a pin in it and wait until the lights go out and then back on again that will reset it. 5 seconds is all you need. Then you go to "voyager.home" and re-enter your user and pass. Mine's been fine for most of the week. I used 5gb in 30 days spot-on. Sometimes the voyager home-page wont load so I do as you...just reboot :) Or, as I said, they do line tests at bt to get your optimum speed sorted so the first ten days are a bit shaky.
