The Raspberry Awards...
...for Lyrics that Jar
I imagine, most ‘English’ men and women can claim some Celtic lineage. I’ve got a Scots father and Irish grandparents, so I rather took to the sentiment of Morrissey’s, ‘Irish Blood, English Heart’ track. BUT – what really bugs me, every time I play it, is that line about Cromwell:
‘And denounce the royal line that still salutes him, and will salute him for ever…’
Excuse me? Cromwell? Not a big fave of the royals, I don't think. His biggest claim to fame being that he led the only uprising in history to successfully throw out the British monarchy since, well since we had a monarchy and chopping Charles I’s head off.
This led me to think. How many other jarring lyrics have ruined good songs (or not so good songs)? The appallingly lame rhyme of ‘best team’ with ‘ever seen’ in Rod Stewart’s, ‘You’re in my Heart..' being one of them.
