This is true and it's mostly a direct result of the US government's policies.
Unfortunately a belief in supporting casino capitalism - and often actively bailing it out with taxpayers cash - rather support for industry has been the core economic policy of both parties in the US for over 20 years, so anyone who opposes is generally portrayed as being extreme or mad.
Clinton was just as keen on this as Reagan and the Bush family.
The stuff about the tax burden is also true and Bush has actively intervened to make the situation worse.
