Ok, here's the prob. Jess (sprog)has just bought (wiv saved pocket money, bless 'im) a new (second hand) pc, which works brilliantly. It's got cd burner, vid card, sound card, 3D card and Windows Millenium OS.

I have Windows XP OS. We each have a network card and cross-wire cable connecting the two pc's. His previous pc had Win '98 and we managed to connect him (through mine, obviously) to the Net. This one, however, is proving a nightmare *groan*.

He also has Norton 2003 and Zone Alarm Pro installed, but disabled, so I don't think that can have anything to do with prob (as they're disabled).

I have disabled my XP firewall on both his LAN connection and mine, but when he connects his cross-wire cable to his pc, my internet goes off (LAN connection disables). Windows Millenium has no inbuilt firewall as far as I know (I've checked).

Also, when I check the 'allow other users to connect directly to your internet via this computer' box (Network connections, LAN connection, properties, advanced - I tried both, but you can only do one or the other, not both, although I get the 'connected, shared' message on the particular LAN connection that I've checked.), I get the following box (again, rough translation): 'It appears that you are behind a firewall that doesn't allow you access to the internet.', so I'm disconnected from the net again. As soon as he unplugs his cable, I can get back on again.

I've done exactly the same process with this (new) pc as I did with his previous one, but it refuses to connect.

Help!!

Anyone got any bright ideas?

Not to sound like an idiot, but are you sure it's a cross over cable? Is it dial-up or DSL? Have you consider getting a router? They go for about 60 dollars here in the US - then you can both share the connection.

It might be best to change the OS on his pc. Millenium is a terrible product just in general from what I've been told. He will have problems with lots of things, not just networking. Maybe a local geek can install win98, win2000, or better yet xp on his pc. It might be that his computer has the firewall, not yours. Also, make sure that on both browsers you have 'allowed all cookies' and have set the security level to the lowest possible. I'm just guessing though. I don't actually know anything about this! That probably makes me an expert..LOL...

Thanks guys, Yes, it's a cross-wire cable that worked fine with previous pc ('98 OS) internet access. I have an ADSL cnnection, not dial-up. His pc doesn't have a firewall, JT, I've checked. Personally, I find XP a nightmare too :-). Maybe I'll install '98 (which I have and can do myself) anyway, although he says he likes ME. Cookies are enabled and have now lowered security levels, so am off to try again... *sigh*

He might like ME, but the rest of the world think's it's pants. Each to his own. Since you have adsl the problem almost certainly has to do with your ISP. Sprog's computer is not being recognized by the isp for some reason. Kinda obvious and not very helpful, but that's about all I can think of.

Oh, thanks Fecky, that was VERY helpful. Can't be ISP, JT, as previous pc (with '98) was connected no probs, same ISP. Have now installed ethernet network card which he had in other pc and this bloody thing refuses to recognise it... *gnashes teeth*
